Where Do You Wear Your Kilt?

I wear Highland Dress much less often than many/most people here, I would imagine.

1) as a working piper I wear Highland Dress to do gigs.

2) I wear band kit when performing with my Pipe Band.

3) having not owned a suit in many years, I wear Highland Dress for those rare occasions when I attend an event where suits are expected.

4) I sometimes wear Highland Dress to Scottish-themed events I attend, say a Highland Games or Scottish concert.

Around my waist. I never did understand why people would hide their kilts away, only to bring them out for special occasions, and then hide them away again. It's almost like they're ashamed that they wear it. Me, on the other hand- I wear when and where I feel like, which is most places.

Just yesterday, I wore a kilt to a music and wine festival. Just prior to that, I had been on a 40 mile, bicycle tour of regional vineyards. And I wanted to get out of my cycling clothes as soon as possible. Donning the kilt in the car park, enabled me to quickly doff the fragrant shorts and jersey, then attend the wine festival in clean attire despite the temperature being in the mid 90's F (mid 30's C).

In Scotland wherever and whenever the mood takes me. Outwith Scotland, then it has to be a VERY special occasion.

As a 'uniform' for Scottish Country and Highland Dancing for 46 years from the age of 14 and, since then, every day for the past 15 years, 3 months and 28 days (Oh, except when laid up in hospital!).

Such as when you were 18 or so, when in relation to girls it gave you a definite advantage over your mates!

I wear mine on a semi-regular basis I'd say... I wear it at all black tie functions, out to concerts, weddings for sure, sometimes when I take the missus out on a date, highland games, nearly all celtic functions, and sometimes just because. I'd probably wear it to bed if the mood struck, haha.

I haven't worn it hiking, or doing any kind of rough work like claving wood, or any kind of long trip... I'm looking into a decent PV kilt for just that wort of thing ;) Not that I don't think the fabric can handle it, mind, the 16 oz fabric is solid as a church.

My father-in-law is much like many kilt-wearers I've met in Calgary. It only comes out on very formal occasions, like the company Christmas party or weddings. Shame too really, as the Anderson is a fine looking tartan and he pulls off the look so well.

Occasionally around the house, at Scouts for St. Andrew's and Burns Night, actually for St. Andrew's Tide, on St. Andrew's and Burns Night if they're on a different day, and any Highland event I may attend, i.e not very often.

I occasionally wear it for other occasions, such as our Sixers Supper as my activity trousers didn't quite do up this year so I now wear it at similar occasions as I'm asked to.

I'll be taking my kilt to Scotland on holiday next year as well.

I'm rather modest and I don't like negative attention. So because of my thin skin only when piping or with others who will be kilted or in their native garb.

I'll definitely be wearing mine to the retirement home when I take them communion on St. Andy's day! I know the old folks will love it when I take off my Alb and they see the symbol of Alba!
