It is a garment, and one with a long and historic past, but so are pants, saris, robes, etc.. Wear it, wear it proud, and don't look to others for validation on your clothing choices..
While I totally agree with all that, I was looking at the question not so much as coming from "seeking validation" so much as something like "In Scotland the kilt seems to be largely a 'special occasion' kind of thing. What do YOU (generic 'you') feel are circumstances where the kilt 'fits'?"
"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."

Mostly just for kilted outings my friends and I take.. a few times a month. I also wear it dancing with my wife, and to obvious Celtic themed events.
I also wear it around the house when I have friends over. Especially when I want to turn a regular party in to a sexy party.

Sorry, removing the pictures, but Grant Devolson Woods's, "American Gothic," the painting with the farmer holding a pich fork standing by his wife, and my picture, of me standing with a pichfork in a canvas kilt next to my cacti is still in my profile picture album here:

It was an inspired picture.

LOL....
Just as a side note, has anyone but me ever looked at the original and thought that the wife really just can't wait for this guy to go to sleep so she can get her hands on that pitchfork?

Like Teufel, I tend to wear the kilt around the house. I first bought a kilt because I always liked them and because my wife likes them. If there's a Celtic event or a kilt night, I'll wear it out, but it's not something that I'd wear daily. (Not that there's anything wrong with wearing it daily.)
I also like the occasional stroll while wearing the kilt.

I wear my kilt for Celtic events, special occasions, or sometimes just going out on the town.

Sorry if I am grumpy, but man up and wear the kilt. or don't, but don't expect us to provide justification. This is your first post, and you ask the question that should already be clear in your mind before you put a kilt on, don't ask us to provide the balls for you to wear one.
A wee bit touchy. Punky (the OP) happens to wear his kilt all the time and isn't looking for validation?? Simply a question to start discussion, isn't that what the forum is for? and so far it's generated a fun discussion w/ 4 pages of posts.
Anyway, I wear mine to the pub (as mentioned before), footy, celtic events, and the odd stroll aboot the moors (well the trail around the local golf course ) so basically, anywhere and everywhere

Like TinTin i generally wear my kilt to football matches, punk shows, beer festivals, the pub, Highland Games, and occasionally for formal events such as weddings. Definitely not looking for validation, moreso wanting to suss out whether this is message board focuses on the kilt as formalwear or everyday wear. Gotten an impressive array of responses.
