Would it be better to wear the black jacket with a different color tie, such as red since there is a predominant red stripe in the MacLeod of Harris tartan, or another color that compliments the colors in the tartan? After I lose weight I will be ordering a charcoal or lovat green argyl jacket.
David, you've answered your own question. I have a black argyle jacket as well and have worn a number of dress shirts with it. Keep them plain and match the colour with that of the kilt. You'll be fine with a white shirt and a plain red tie, no problem.

I quite agree with Al. on this one (as on most things, actually!!). A plain coloured tie, complimenting one of the kilt's predominant colours, is best.

Black neckties are for funerals (bowties being the exception); grey silk ones are for weddings and tartan ones are for wear with plain kilts or, Heaven forbid, trousers - never, NEVER with tartan kilts!
