Eclipse: Black&Tan variant

When our local got Bass on tap after having had Guinness already for years, I tried my hardest to teach the Iranian bartender (and owner) how to make Black & Tan. Alas, I was unsuccessful. He just couldn't get the layers to separate and always ended up with a mixed-up mess, in spite of me showing him how to do it. Anyway, he declared it impossible and gave up.

Fast-forward, MONTHS later, I walk in to find someone drinking what else? A Black & Tan. Seems that he finally learned how to make 'em... They're certainly not my favourite drink, but I will have one from time to time.

But in terms of variants... How about the pousse-café? It's not beer, but it's certainly a layered drink...

I'll have to give this one a try. My last name Cernoch translates to 'black man' so a Black Czech works well.

Richard: I love Black and Tans. I have had them over Fat Tire - a Belgium Amber Ale and they are excellent.

While sitting in a beach-side bar in Jacksonville, FL one afternoon, I ordered a Black and Tan. The waitress told me that they did not have Guinness on tap, so they could not make a single B&T. They had to make a minimum of two.

That was an easy problem to solve.

Whilst visually striking, I always find the actual taste of Pousse Cafe drinks to be overly sweet and gimmicky. The one illustrated is quite a beauty, I'll admit.

After bar-tending for a couple of years in college, I also learned to question the general sanity/intellect of those actually ordering one.

I've tried a number of these Guinness combinations and although they are all perfectly drinkable, my favorite is a "Black on Black" which is half a Guinness poured slowly over half a Guinness. Deeeelicious!

I couldn't agree more

Also, If you haven't tried it, give Murphy's Stout a go. I actually think it's a bit smoother and a little more malty than Guinness. Makes for a slightly different taste for the above drinks as well.

The Granite Brewery here in Halifax makes two beers that layer well. "O'Keefe's Stout" and "Peculiar" which is a dark english ale. It's not on the menu, but the barkeep will do it for you if you ask. I guarantee you, after a few of these, things will get a little peculiar too...

I find it very hard to sick around when they run out of Liffey Water.... Unless I had a hand in emptying the keg.....

I'll have to try this combo. Blue Moon is my absolute favorite......taste is so.....hard to describe, but its uniqueness is its charm, and paired with Guinness should prove to be awesome.
