    Shepherds Plaid

I bought some brown and ivory check wool material off ebay and started making a shepherds plaid. WELL my fiance saw me working on it while we were at the firehouse. We got a call and she tried to work on it while we were gone and she did great! She has now taken over the project. She is not crafty at all but I think she has been bitten by the DIY bug.

When it is finished I will post more pics as well as I am working on a photo project of how to fold and wear the plaid as explained in The Book of The Club of True Highlanders.

I assume you're a fireman? How did the call end up?

I really like that fabric. Maybe it'll get cold enough this year to wear!

It was just a typical alarm run. I may wear it next weekend to the games in Scotsboro AL.

    Re: Shepherds Plaid

I wear a day plaid sometimes. The Macphersons are known for their modern useage of day plaids with their hill-checks and tweed jackets. The late Macpherson Chieftain, Euan Macpherson of Glentruim, always wore his plaid to our Clan Macpherson annual gathering and rally in Badenoch- as well as other appropriate daytime events. He wore a "drummer's" plaid with his evening attire. Both plaids had a purled fringe, same manner of fringing as in a piper's plaid. See the photo of Glentruim below. I've also included a photo of the late Clan Cameron Chief, Colonel Sir Donald Hamish Cameron of Lochiel, K.T., wearing his day plaid in splendid form. Notice, the colour scheme of the tartan in the day plaid Lochiel is wearing; it does not necessarily have to match the colour scheme of the tartan in the kilt - I personally think the ensemble looks best when the sett is the same, if not very similar in size and scale, and the colour scheme is the same. There has been much discussion of the use of plaids with daywear on this forum.

    Euan Macpherson of Glentruim.

Colonel Sir Donald Hamish Cameron of Lochiel, K.T.

    Cheers,

The way it describes is similar to Euan Macpherson of Glentruim but slightly different.

Looking good! I wish I had occasion to wear mine more often.

Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, maybe I will.

I didn't purl the fringe on mine. I left it plain, but then I put the plaid in the washer (cold water) and let it tumble dry for a bit just to felt up the fabric. The fringe came out naturally twiseted in a wonderful way that almost looks purled from a distance!

I wonder if Lochiel knows he's missing a button on his cuff.

Now two, in the soon to be family, are at it. Looks great as usual Harold. You have that enviable eye that can see something useful being made out of anything and the talent to do it
