If you are worried about the thickness of a folded over edge hem, you could overlock/serge the raw edge and then hem , this will mean that you don't have to fold over twice and consequently having an extra thick edge, I have done this sometimes when using a tweed that had a bad edge, I'll see if i can find a picture
Cutting and trimming and fraying the hem is possible I'm sure, but it is an huge ammount of work to reweave 8 yards of tartan, but yes generally speaking a twill weave on most tartans is 2 over/2 under.
thanks Paul i new you would come to my reuse and talk some sens in to me i know its a big job all probably just do the surger next time i order im going to call Scotweb and make sure they don't send me any of this tuck under salvige again it look so heave to me
