    King Robert the Bruce

Taking advantage of the good weather recently I visited Dunfermline and its abbey where Robert the Bruce is buried. His grave is under the pulpit of the abbey here -

This was not his original burial place and when his remains were moved here a plaster cast was taken of his skull -

The Abbey itself dates back to around 800 AD and this is the interior of the original building -

quite small and unfurnished and anyone who has visited Roslin chapel will recognise the type of carved pillars.
The exterior shows the flying buttresses supporting the old part and the new part at the far end with the distinctive tower bearing the Bruce legend -

Lastly, Braveheart fans may not be aware that William Wallace's mother lies buried in the grounds of the Abbey -

Not the same thorn tree after all these years, but somewhere here -

Impressive pictures of fascinating, historical subjects. Thanks for posting them for us to enjoy.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Truly amazing craftsmanship in these pictures. Makes you wonder how they did it then and why do we struggle today to make something half as nice!

    Regards

And (mostly only of interest to those of the Crawford ilk) William's mother was a Crawford... Margaret de Crauford (b. 1250 - the daughter of Sir Reginald de Crauford, the Sheriff of Ayr)

    *dreams*

Gah I need to get over there so badly. I think when I finally get to see Scotland (and Ireland) I will just look at these things and cry. I grew up hearing these names but never got to see where these heroes lived.
