I did some looking around for kilt pins recently to start a collection beyond my MacKintosh crest pin I have now and found an outstanding US Marines kilt pin. I emailed the photo of it, along with a few pics of the USMC Pipers, to my commander, who is a former Marine and he loved it. Wouldnt it be wild if I could convince him he should wear kilts just because the USMC has it's own tartan & kilt pin!

    Warning

This might be an opportune moment for a word of warning, especially to those who might just be starting out on their kilting careers, and particularly to those who are blessed with more than one kilt.

Once you have pinned your kilt pin to the front apron of your kilt, please leave it there for as long as possible. If you have more than one kilt, then invest in a kilt pin for each kilt.

Every time you re-pin your kilt - especially the traditional woollen tartan one - you damage the fabric. Constant removal and re-pinning can literally ruin a kilt over a period of time.

Believe me, I am not saying this for the sake of it. That damage can be 'real' - as can the damage caused by constantly wearing sporran CHAINS instead of sporran straps.

Hamish advised... If you have more than one kilt, then invest in a kilt pin for each kilt.
    Seconded by blu...
Excellent advice. This something I only figured out 6 months ago. I now have pins for each kilt. Fortunately the damage done was repairable.

Not to mention the damage caused if the kilt pin is caught or snagged on something.

While at work I tend not to wear a pin for that reason.

"If you have more than one kilt, then invest in a kilt pin for each kilt."

That's why I'm looking for the thread re: XMarks kilt pins. I have one, but would like a few more. Is there going to be another order sometime this winter? As I acquire more kilts, I want more kilt pins.

    scoutniagra,

I would suggest sending a PM to the one and only Wizard of BC and letting him know your interest. I believe he is trying to get another run together. I have three of them and they are my favorite kilt pins (they also make great hat badges).

    Cheers

I don't use a kilt pin. With the sporran and the third kilt strap, I don't see a kilt pin being much use other than decorative. Just my opinion.

Maybe in the three years since this thread was started Graham has had the chance to educate him.
