fly plaid and military uniform
I am a member of the Scottish American Military Society. My granddaughter is getting married, and wants me to be in my full uniform, with Prince Charlie jacket and vest. I have two questions. 1. Is it appropriate to wear a fly plaid with military decorations? 2. If so, how is the fly plaid fastened? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: fly plaid and military uniform
Usual convention frowns upon a fly plaid with a PC and medals are usually only worn (miniatures) at certain formal events when requested by the dress code. For example, Remembrance (Veterans) Day parades, military do etc
But - there is no rule that absolutely says you cannot do either

Re: fly plaid and military uniform
Miniature medals are appropriate at any black tie event in the USA. Did a fair bit of research when I got married (Navy uniform regs).
I think the fly plaid would be a bit much with medals.

Thanks. I believe I will follow her wishes, and wear the decoratios (miniature of course), but not the fly plaid. I just couldn't picture using a Munitions Maintenance or EOD badge as a brooch.

I think that they can both work together:

Xzoomy,
First--thank you for your service--I have a personal thing about wearing a uniform while no longer in the service (my issue and I'm getting therapy for it ) BUT--its your Granddaughter's wedding and she wants to see you all fitted up--so I say go for it. Sure the plaid MAY be a bit much, but I'd have her preview it and give you the thumbs up or down. Personally I think an EOD badge would make a fine brooch! But what do I know--I was a SWCC.
There will be no doubt, several opinions posted here--I'd say let your granddaughter make the call--the day is about her. She must be proud of you!

Re: fly plaid and military uniform
Hello Brother,
I've known some to wear a fly plaid with their mess kit, so it can work I think for a PC. Personally I think it doesn't look as sharp, but that's just me. I've never donned a fly plaid with my mess kit for instance.
Since it's your granddaughters wedding I think you can ignore most "rules" and just wear what she wants, especially if it makes her happier on her day
As for using a "Munitions Maintenance or EOD badge as a brooch" you don't have to. You could attach it with a standard brooch of some sort and than add that badge either to your PC lapel, or if it's too big to go there, attach it to the fly plaid just under the fastening brooch. It's not quite standard, but it still works. I've seen some people place their metal jump wings there until they got proper lapel miniatures.
Slainte!

Chas, if I may ask, is that a PC with 5 button vest and jabot? The reason I ask is that I have been thinking of wearing a regulation doublet with 5 button vest and jabot. I like the look of what you have done there. Cheers

Xzoomy: Wear whatever you and your granddaughter decide.
Chas: That's a stunningly handsome outfit. You look great in it. Is that some kind of plaid extension below your brooch? It looks very nice, and highlights the macaroni.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
