Re: Modern Formal
I, too was thinking of this the other day. So here's my take.
Kilt:
Charcoal, "almost black" contemporary (non-wool, not tartan) kilt in the hemp/recycled polyester material that I am such a big fan of. I am thinking X-Kilt, with a bit more weight to it, but a charcoal or actual black knife-pleat would be fine. I have never understood the point of the satin stripe, like some imaginative soul put on a Utilikilt once.
Jacket:
In essence, a short-waisted version of this:

Nehru jacket - 60's attack... Think of an Ike jacket with a Nehru or Mandarin collar.
Like this, but again, short-waisted:

Contrasting waistcoat...go easy on the shocking colors. Silver would be fine. Fancy belt not needed.
White banded collar formal shirt. This:

No tie, though some appropriate piece of manly bling could be used instead of a topmost button on the shirt collar.
Footwear. I HATE the idea of putting together combat boots or some Gothic substitute with formal.
I, personally HATE this....this is just me. So I would team up plain old regular white or black hose of excellent quality- no flashes - with some solid but unique shoes... maybe these?

Re: Modern Formal
In fact the collar/jacket here is not THAT weird. That's the same kind of collar you'd find on a Sherrifmuir doublet. So consider it an updated take on the Sherriffmuir.

microfiber? Hmm..maybe. I'd have to see it. But take that jacket and shorten it, and I think that'd work just fine with a contemporary kilt.

Re: Modern Formal
I like the monochrome idea very much, bu I would probably opt for a bit more colour.
Black kilt (possibly shadow tartan)
Dark red hose
Dress shirt by Louis & Clerk (domestic specialty Japanese brand) that uses kimono pattern inlays. probably not this specific design; I put it here just to give an idea of what kind of product they produce.
Tied Bowtie (black & red rose floral pattern)
Jacket? I'd probably have to design and sew it myself because I can visualize it in my mind but don't think such a thing exists.
Shoes: oxfords with a 2-3 inch heel. (I'm going for not just 'modern' but also 'edgy') :-)

Sorry, I know I was going to stay out of the thread.
What about the sporran, CDNSushi; unless I'm just missing it in your post?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Why? That was an excellent question. Clearly I forgot to mention it. Lol. At first I thought of not havin one at all... But on second thought I would probably commission a custom one. I'd want it a bit different than a standard sporran. I'm thinking: almost square (rather than round), covered with black-silver, short-hair hide (just think of a cow hide) and a flat, silver cantle. Again, I can see it in my mind's eye, but unlikely that such a thing currently exists.

Strangely, I kind of like the smooth, black leather sporrans with silver cantles that are fairly simple. I have one here from Celtic Croft. it's not high quality, but if it were, I don't find anything wrong with the concept.
