Scotch and snack foods

It might be just my tastes but I find snacks such as almonds, peanuts and cashews go quite well with Islay scotch (Laphroaig, Bowmore, Ardbeg); Cracker snacks with salt goes very well with Island scotch (Jura and Highland Park); and fruit snacks such as apples, pears, and cherries are excellent with highland scotch.

For whatever reason, potato chips, all cookies, popcorn and cheese bites just don't seem to go well with any of my favorite scotch.

I need new snack/scotch options given that my Texas Rangers are facing a critical game six in St. Louis tomorrow. I expect to go through several drams of scotch and "buckets" of snacks watching the Rangers tomorrow!

I can't be as precise as you have been regarding which snacks go well with which Scotch regions, but you might try a cheese and cracker platter.

Then again, it is a baseball game, so how about hot dogs, nachos, peanuts and cracker jacks.

If all else fails, just smoke a cigar with your dram!

I think nuts in general are a good accompaniment to Scotch. Roasted Cashews are my favorite with Islay, Island or other Highland Malts. Fruit is too sweet for my palate to mix with Whisky.

I do agree that chips/crisps popcorn and cheese bites don't mix well with Scotch, I think it's the greasy component to them that coats the tongue and adversely effects the taste Scotch.

I don't have a sweet tooth (I'm a savory man) so cookies don't usually enter the equation for me and haven't been tested with the Malt.

For me personally that sounds like Islay fodder. The OP pretty much nailed it as far as I'm concerned.

Nuts are OK, but with an evening whisky if an I'm going to eat something, I go with a something on the sweet side - like an oatmeal/raisin cookie, say....

Not quite sports snacks, but here is an interesting article on pairing food with whisky.

Sounds like savory dishes (seafood, wild game, chocolate) are the way to go.

I've got to say, I think I'll continue to take mine neat, in a Glencairn crystal glass, with a side of water to cleanse the palette (not to add to the whisky).

If anything, I'd add a nice hand-rolled cigar, something dark, oily, and full-flavored.

I do like dark chocolate with whisky but my preferred whisky is Glenfiddich, I dont enjoy the peaty whiskies. And I guess because Glenfiddich is produced near my home town that its a flavour I enjoy.

We do have a tradition in our house also of eating salmon at Christmas, accompanied by a wee dram or two

Salmon seems to be a popular Christmas item! I do a salmon souffle on Christams Eve for a lighter meal before the next day's huge Christmas dinner. It's a tradition handed down from my mother to me, and it just wouldn't feel like Christmas Eve without it.
