Tartan Kilt for Vegans
Hi I'm new to Xers. Found it by google-ing "vegan kilt", but it only referred to kilt belt leather alternatives, which I think we can source from Melbourne.
Both myself and my eldest son have kilts passed down fro my father. My second son (a skinny 6ft 3inch redhead) is a vegan and would not accept a wool kilt. Does anyone know where we can obtain a polyester/cotton kilt in our clan tartan (McNicol)? Given Andrew's height it may be necessary to order to size, but where from? I've been searching the net for a couple of years for this and even asked a few outlets when visiting Scotland last year.
PS we're in Australia.

Not being vegan myself, why is that an issue? Wool is a "animal product", yes, but it's also a "renewable resource" in that the animals don't have to be killed or harmed in order to get it: Basically they just give the sheep a haircut, and it grows back.
I'm asking from simple ignorance and curiosity.
"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."

And if I remember correctly is actually beneficial to the sheep. However, to answer the question
Polyester Cotton is not really viable for a kilt, but Polyester Viscose is. But beware, there are also Acrylic kilts around that originate from Pakistan. These kilts are cheap but the quality can be inconsistent, ranging from OK to downright awful, and the marketing used usually attempts to deceive you that it is a Scottish cloth and garment. Be careful who you buy from
The only good quality Polyester Viscose I am aware of is made by Marton Mills in England. They supply kilt makers worldwide so there should be no problem in getting a kilt made to measure, although the tartan range is a little limited compared to pure wool
I have no idea about kilt makers in Australia but there are certainly kilt makers on this forum who could make you the kilt you require. If you find someone more local to you, just make sure you insist on proper Polyester Viscose, not cheap acrylic
I am sure some of our Australian members will be able to jump in and help a bit more

[slight threadjcak]Tell him to get one here. He'll be much happier with the finished product.[/slight threadjack]
Back to the OT:
We vegans have different definitions of veganism, different "degrees" of it, and different reasons for it. Some of us are "this way" for health reasons, some for ethical ones, and others for their own reasons. Try PMing Steve Ashton (or click on the Freedom Kilts logo above) and ask him about your tartan woven in PV.

When given a choice, most people will choose.

I'm asking from simple ignorance and curiosity.
I would also like to know, having the same view as Dale.
Poly viscose (PV) would be a good choice for the kilted vegan, as it is made from plant cellulose.

Re: Tartan Kilt for Vegans
All good advice.
I can understand why the young lad won't wear wool and fully support his reasons for doing so. I will say that sometimes you can bend the rules. In this case it's an heirloom kilt so no sheep were harmed within his lifetime. Think of the 3 R's of recycling.
If this kilt can't be altered to fit, then go for a PV.

Re: Tartan Kilt for Vegans
Thanks to all for your input. I've now got a few ideas to follow up. To clarify - Andrew's preference as a vegan is not to capitalise on products originating from animals, eg honey from bees is out of the question.
Anyway, thanks all.

Re: Tartan Kilt for Vegans
Ladies and gentlemen of XMarks,
This thread was brought to the moderators' attention as not being very befitting of what we stand for as members of this community. As a result it has been temporarily locked and moved, pending a decision by the moderator team as to how it should be dealt with.
As I see it, piperbdh is right on the money. Without pointing specific fingers at anyone, I see two main problems with this thread.
First, the rules and principles of XMTS are not being upheld.
For those who may have not looked at the rules and principles recently, here is a link and an excerpt (bold=mine):
Mission Statement
This site is a place where our members can enjoy the company of all other fellow kilt wearers. We wish to provide a place where those who choose to wear the kilt can find friendship, information, guidance, advice, and share their kilt experiences with others.
Our guiding principles will always be;
“ We agree to conduct ourselves as the Ladies and Gentlemen of X Marks.” This site has always been a place where our members treat each other in a polite and respectful, open and honest manner at all times.
Rule #2
–-We believe in fostering polite discussion. Posts primarily intended to provoke quarrels, escalate contention, or are hostile or insulting, are subject to removal.
Rule #4
- A person has a right to a reasonable expectation to respect and privacy. Posts or photos which defame, mock, ridicule, or which voice or promote prejudice or bigotry of any kind are subject to removal. Posts or photo which invade someone's privacy are also subject to removal.
Second, although it may not be a rule or principle, I am disappointed that a brand new user on the forum wouldn't even receive a "hello" and "welcome" before having their inaugural thread turn into a rather negative discussion.
The moderators will discuss this thread and decide whether it will remain locked, or be returned to the open forum with possible changes.
