I guess in the States it's used more often than not. I myself use this idiom often and, as pointed out by English Bloke, it probably is quite offensive to some.

Your a Scot man wear damg well what you please. You might like to honor a fellow and ask to where his tartan, or use a Distric tartan, there are many to look at for one the gets your eye...
