Scottish Country dancing
Hamish - as I have been a member of the RSCDS for over forty years, we must have mutual acquaintances! I did try to post a pic of me ready to go to a recent Highland Ball, but the upload did not seem to work.
Graham - am delighted that you enjoy SCD and hope that you have encouraged your son to dance. I dance in San Francsico as well as in the UK, and I am always saddened that most guys in the US wear shorts (instead of kilts) for class. I cannot imagine any man being comfortable doing SCD except in a kilt.
(P.S. SCD is fun for singles, too!!!

SCD
I started SCD as a teenager with my parents in the local Caledonian Club, and later got roped into a demonstration at university – for which I was required to wear a borrowed kilt. A kilt? Me in a kilt?
But I survived the experience and soon acquired my own made to measure (thanks to generous parents).
I have been dancing ever since, joined a group in the Hague to make some friends there, got a group going in Marrkech, would you believe it? Joined another in NCarolina, and have founded groups here in France.
It's a great sociable international pastime, exercise for the body and the brain. I can't imagine life without.
My latest endeavour was to organize an SCD holiday near Grenoble last summer which was great fun with people coming from 9 different nations – a reflexion of the universal appeal of this kind of activity, and the worldwide spread of kilt wearing. I'm organizing a second dancing holiday at the end of June, if anyone is interested.

Although most of the dancers in France are French and probably have no family connexions with Scotland, they all have kilts, but I am ceertainly the only man that wears one when not dancing.
Kilts here seem to be associated with rugby more than anything else (supporters travel kilted), and when strangers speak to me about my kilt, they invariably ask me what I thought of the latest match.

David, if I were single I'd say SCD is a great way to meet a lass who is healthy and fit.
I'm amazed at the energy of even quite elderly members, I can only conclude that SCD is good for the health!
We actually have a problem with the lack of men, there are more women and girls to take it up. Often, women have to wear a tartan ribbon that indicates they are dancing the mens part.
Martin, I'm impressed with your involvment, and I'm surprised at the rugby/kilted connection.
We don't see that here, well I don't think so, I've never been to a rugby match (or any match for that matter).

I've only tried SCD the one time, and unfortunately I was in shorts (I hadn't gotten my first kilt yet. I found it really enjoyable, and will be going again this year.
As for the single lasses, I have tried to tell my single friends that this is the place to be in a kilt. I was there with my wife, and still got hit on a lot (in shortS EVEN).

The one I went to last year was in Queens Park near my place. It is part of the Hyack festival that takes place in at the end of May. check out http://www.hyack.bc.ca/
Yes I did tell all of you guys about the lasses. Most of the SCD gatherings are at the Scottish Cultural Centre, but they are one the same night as our kiltsnights. http://www.hyack.bc.ca/community%20events.htm#Scottish the SCD this year is on MAy 28th. Are you still in town at that point?

Anyone know of a place in Utah?
I ballroom dance, but never have tried Scottish Country Dancing. I was wondering if anyone here knew of a locale in northern Utah where I could learn.

Alas, I do not know Utah at all, Macwizzard. The only group in the State that is affiliated to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) is in Salt Lake City - "The Salt Lake Scottish Country Dancers" I have the address and 'phone number of the Secretary. E-mail me at Lycrakilt@aol.com if you'd like it.
Of course, there may well be other SCD groups/clubs scattered across the State that are not affiliated, but they would not be listed in my RSCDS Directory.
Here in the UK, our public Libraries would have details of all such groups in their vicinity. Perhaps yours would also.
