Kyle, These photos are great, and purely as a matter of personal preference I prefer to wear brown oxfords or brogues with my tweed argyle day wear. However, having exceptionally long narrow feet (UK size 11, 'A' width fitting) wear what fits best, currently black brogues.
Cheers

I now realize that these aren't your own photos. I found the same photos on the Aboyne games website. The tie that everyone is wearing has the Gordon crest, a stags head on a crown, with the words By Dand above it. In other close up photos it is obvious that some of the shirts are patterned shirts. So that answers that question.

Indeed, some of the shirts have a subtle pattern.
Correct, I never claimed that the photos were mine - just wanted to share more visuals in regards to Highland attire! I stumbled upon them merely by accident when doing a bit of research online. However, I have been to the Aboyne games several times, and have always had a great time. A good friend of mine that now lives in the States, is originally from Aberdeen, and him and I have met up whilst over in Scotland. Fun times!
Cheers,

I did get an answer to my original question through an email to the games secretary. A speedy response as well.

Excellent. I like the look, so I'll be on the prowl.

Nice pics. I was first taken to the Aboyne games in 1964 as a four year old. I have lost count of the times I have been since, but it's probably in the 30's.
The lapel badges are interesting. I have a silver lapel clan badge hallmarked from the early 1920's. It has a small ring on the back of it for sticking your sprig of plant badge in. It doesnt't look like the ones in the pic though, it's more like a smaller version of the badges we wear in our balmorals.
In my younger day brown brouges were worn with tweeds, as were brown belts and plain brown sporrans. There used to be a Brown Brogues & Tweeds association that ran piping competitions. Last time I went to one of their comps was in 2005, I don't know if they are still on the go.

I frequently see tattersal shirts being worn by Scots ex-pats wearing the kilt at Games here in the US, and so have always assumed them to be not uncommon in Scotland. When I was there last year and attended the games at Pitlochrie, I noted several.

I have also noted on myself that when I see photographs of me in a tattersal shirt, half the time the shirt looks plain white in the picture especially if the pattern is more subtle. So perhaps more of the men at the Aboyne games are wearing them than we realize.
On another note, I seem to notice more men in these photos wearing traditional garter ties, rather than modern elastic garters. I believe this is a growing trend.
Also, several (the Marquis of Huntly chief among them) are wearing garters which match, or closely tone with the sock, rather than contrast with the hose as is the general practice.

I suspect there's a huge amount of truth in that
I've always noticed whenever I get a new car that I suddenly see everyone else driving the same model, where I never noticed before. I guess we see what we want to see but if we're not thinking about it we simply don't notice
