Ties and kilts
Anyone have any thoughts on wearing tie that is the same tartan as the kilt and a white shirt.

I'm not a fan of that look, nor do I like flashes in the same tartan as one's kilt. Why? Not traditional enough for me
I wear my tartan tie with a regular suit or with a solid colour kilt...

Also not a fan of tartan ties whilst wearing a kilt, tartan waistcoat for formal wear I like, but no to a tartan tie at anytime with a kilt. With a tartan tie and your kilt, you look like your wearing at tartan arrow pointing to your head.
Don't like tartan flashes either.

It's usually not done. A plain coloured tie to tone with the kilt is the preferred option for day wear although many will go with a striped tie - perhaps a regimental or similar tie
For semi-formal (black Argyll) a silver grey wedding tie

Personally, I do not own a tartan tie to go with any of my kilts, and do wear solid colors, with the occasional stripe, most of the time. But what's the big deal if someone wants to do it?? On some guys, it looks extremely good. On the other hand, my eye gets all bent out of shape looking at a tartan vest that matches the kilt...way too much for my eye to comprehend. So, I guess it boils down to: it's in the eye of the beholder!

That's exactly how I feel about it too. I have several tartan ties, but they only get worn with trousers. Wearing them with a tartan kilt would be a little overboard, in my opinion. The same applies with tartan flashes. It borders on "tartan madness". I think the best look is one where the tartan kilt is the base of everything, and the tie, flashes/garters, and everything else compliments it (without being too matchy-matchy, of course ).
Somewhere in the non-compulsory rules of Highland dress, it has been written that the general rule is "no tartan above the waist". I'm not quite sure who penned that, but it's generally good advice, with the exception of tartan-on-the-bias waistcoats for formal occasions. Or vintage/reenactment outfits where tartan jackets are seen.
I guess the question is how traditional you want to be. If you don't care a whit about tradition, then wear whatever you think looks good. There are plenty of people out there who do wear tartan ties and flashes with their kilt.
Lastly, I tend to avoid wearing a white shirt with a kilt unless it's for formal wear. Each to his own, of course, but coloured shirts and tattersal shirts really do look much better and more natural with a kilt.

How is it that a tartan tie is "too much" and yet, a tartan waistcoat is not?

It's no big deal at all

Absolutely it is in the eye of the beholder. But it's still not USUALLY done! ith:
Many years ago I saw someone at Cowal Highland Games wearing a Royal Stewart kilt with Royal Stewart matching accessories, including Royal Stewart golf umbrella but he merely raised a knowing smile amongst the rest of us who simply do not do that. We could, but we don't, because it's over kill

Pass. But I do have to say that I don't like that look very much myself, even if it is well accepted and very traditional
But then again this is not about following "rules". It is about knowing what the traditions are, what the current fashions are, and then pleasing yourself. At least if you do something others would not normally do you are doing so knowingly, not out of ignorance of the customs
