It is said by several of our local Scots, that flat caps are not worn with kilts, in the Highlands. At one point there were some inflammatory posts made. I remember one person telling forestermodern, to "take that awful piece of candy off of your head" ...that's pretty close to a direct quote. This started a fair bit of conflict, reminiscent of the hullaballoo over white kilt hose.
Upshot is that I'm sure it's true that in the Highlands, flat caps/driving caps aren't usually worn with kilts. Those same lads who won't wear such a cap with a kilt, often happen to own one or more of these caps and like them just fine. Jock Scot has said that Mrs. Jock has put her foot down and told him..."no more caps".... so it's not like the lads don't like these caps. They just don't wear them with a kilt.
Flat/driving caps = good.... BUT
Flat/driving caps + kilts ... not done in the Highlands.
Here in the USA, some gents follow that practice. Flat caps are fine, they just don't wear them with traditionally styled tartan kilts. Other fellows, like me for example, really like to wear flat caps with a tartan kilt. The look is apparently somewhat jarring to some of our Scottish members, but I think they've sort of gotten used to it, though it's still "not done" in the highlands. Certainly, nobody has ever really said much about wearing a flat cap with a "contemporary" kilt like a Utilikilt or Freedom Kilt or X-Kilt. Those aren't traditional kilts, and seems like everybody agrees that if you wear such a thing, then a flat cap is just fine, if you want to wear one.
It all became kind of a controversy along the lines of the white hose thing, but it seems to have quieted down rather a lot in the past year or so. So now when it comes up, my sense is that most people mention the old squabble more tongue-in-cheek than anything else.
As a total aside, I happen to think that GGGP would look great in a flat cap and swishy kilt skirt.

I hope they post road signs in Inverness warning us about this.

Why thank you, I have worn this.
black flat cap, black (billie) kilt, black ""wife beater" tank top, cardigan, and motorcycle boots.
I was completely in drag!

The only drag occurring here, cousin, was the men dragging their eyes back to the women they were with that evening. Sounds like a good combo.

In your case, wouldn't that be a "husband beater"

Looking good Alan H, those hose are really lovely!
I'm coming to suspect that Jock Scot and Alan H have more in common than I might originally have thought... they both profess to put very little energy into their kilt attire, and yet they both always seem to be well turned out. I guess they're just naturals
