Re: Vest cut on the bias or not?

I get serious waistcoat envy every time I see Sandy's waistcoat - that is a true work of art! It must have been a bit of a headache for the tailor to ensure the tartan lined up so perfectly both across the front closure and on the lapels.

And for what it's worth, my preference is also for on-the-bias tartan waistcoats

Re: Vest cut on the bias or not?

Here's a pic of "a great slab of tartan with a head stuck on top."

How this came to be was after my kiltmaker sewed up my X Marks tartan kilt she had enough extra cloth to sew a vest. When I asked about bias vs. horizontal she strongly urged me to have her sew it horizontal. Maybe it takes more cloth for the bias and she didnt have that much left over. Maybe this is her preference.

Since I was new to all this and she attended kiltmaker's school in Scotland and has her qualification I went ahead with her recommendation.

Seems fine to me. Don't know if there's an X Marks vest out there cut on the bias.

Think its up to what a man chooses for himself. Either way - its gonna be a LOT of tartan and there's gonna be a head stuck on top.

Re: Vest cut on the bias or not?

Just BTW, to follow up on Riverkilt's post, it does take more material to cut a vest on the bias. Simple geometry (ha ha).

I have an Xmarks tartan vest-on-the-bias on the to-do list, but it is a ways down (and depends on how closely the coming-from-USA-Kilts PV matches the PV-we-already-have).
