The makers of the low-cost Colt narrowed the profile of the handle, but I still only let the last 1/3 show above my hosetop. Don't want it flipping out.

Yes, I actually have that Colt sgian
Without the butt cap and profiling on the hose side though, it doesn't have quite the same look as the OP, does it?

Re: New custom sgian dubh- late to the party
I just caught on that the profile of the handle might contribute to its staying in place. But might that be better managed ( handled?) by making it concave towards the middle? Or maybe a ripple effect of three ridges separated by two indentations? I know that is getting away from the simplicity of the design and maybe some of its beauty, but might that help the weight issue?
Otherwise, I think the simplest solution for a heavy knife is probably a tighter garter. If one wanted to get elaborate, a flat patch worn on the other side (under the sock cuff) could keep the garter from pinching by distributing the force over a wider area.

Re: New custom sgian dubh
Received the sgian in the mail last night.
The maker did a good job, though it's a bit thicker than I'd envisioned (11/16" or .6875") and a good deal heavier. I'm not saying that it's unworkable as a sgian, but I fear that the weight and thickness might make it a bit uncomfortable to wear for long for a small framed guy like me. Perhaps a bigger guy could pull it off.
At any rate, it's a nice piece of work.
Thanks for the comments.

Re: New custom sgian dubh
That is a nice design, and obviously very well made.
I've been toying with ideas and designs for a full tang Sgian myself for some time but, as others have mentioned, have been concerned about weight and balance.
Maybe someday I'll give one a try, but I think I'd be hard pressed to come up with something as nice as Drac's.

Red and black are my college colors. I wouldn't mind having a knife like that.

I actually have one as well, but I had Steve at Oconokee leatherworks make a molded leather sheath for it. Unfortunately, Steve isn't taking any more orders at this time.
