Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter
Jimmy, oh Jimmy, you sound like a southern softie big man, wear your kilt, harden up, it's not cold wearing it as others have shown, pop up to Inveraray one day, meet up with me at the tourist office, I wear the kilt everyday

Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter
Northern Ireland has had a much milder winter than last year and I'm still wearing the kilt each weekend. Walked on Rathlin Island off the Antrim coast and in the Mountains of Mourne last weekend and it was quite cold and windy at times but it was only my top half that ever got cold.

It seems that most people have got the wrong end of the stick here, I don't mind the cold, it doesn't bother me, I have worn the kilt in all weathers. What I am talking about is the lack of kilt wearing opportunities during winter as opposed to the more numerous opportunities in summer.
Anyway here is a pic of myself outside the Duke's castle in Inverary a few weeks ago at the food and drink festival held in his grounds. Pity I did not know that you wear in the tourist office, I would have dropped in. I would'nt mind a job with the tourist board, its something I would enjoy, any vacancies anywhere, where do you apply to?

Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter
Jimmy, since your post about your cruise and now this photo everyone has come back to say that you're looking good, and you ARE looking good, but I think that your look could be improved heaps just by wearing your kilt a little higher. Perhaps 2 to 3 inches? Just my opinion.

Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter
I regret that I do not have any kilted snow pics, but I do fill your pain. For some reason I can only wear a kilt on a day that ends with the letter "Y."

Sorry, I was a bit off topic with that one. I think Jimmy is trying to say that after St Andrews Day, Christmas and Hogmanay, there aren't many festive holidays which can be used as "kilted opportunities" (as he calls them) in the Winter. I myself don't need any festive holidays to use as a "kilted opportunity". Although it's nice to get cleaned up, dressed up and to go out with like minded people for an evening, I can still wear my kilts for everyday things like shopping, out for a walk, up the pub for a pint, out to eat in a restaurant and such things.

Re: Kilted opportunities in Winter
I understand what Jimmy means, that there are fewer special, kilt oriented occasions during the Winter. Of course one is free to wear the kilt any time they like (when work regulations or safety do not contravene) but I personally prefer to reserve public kilt-wearing for kilt-oriented, or at least festive, events.
In order to wear kilts more often, here are a few options. I often throw on a kilt when I'm at home. Some members participate in Scottish Country dancing or play the bagpipes. One might also try to organize their local Xmarkers for a kilt night.

Sorry Jimmy, I'm afraid you wouldn't get the job, the white hose would go against you
Just pop into your local VisitScotland office and register your interest with them, they are always looking for seasonal staff

A typical January 20F day in Boston is pleasant enough to wear a wool kilt with hose etc. with layers on top, undershirt, shirt, tweed argyle, and an overcoat or parka. A typical 40F day in Glasgow with the damp and in similar clothes downright chills you to the bone. Not to mention being splashed in dirty water by the passing traffic.

Peter you have hit the nail on the head! Cold dry weather is tolerable but the raw damp days in UK are far more uncomfortable. When it gets like that I will wear plain flesh coloured tights under my kilt hose as an extra layer. It works and is discrete enough for no one to be aware. Cold & Raw sums it up!
