Re: tie with a prince charlie?
Always one for getting it right I have decided that rather than spoiling the barrel for a ha'porth of tar I will go conventionally dressed this time and save highland attire for another event . Too many compromises potentially none of which I was comfortable with .

That is probably a wise decision... I once attended a wedding kilted before I had acquired enough kit to really put together an appropriate outfit. It was a mishmash of levels of formality and I'm somewhat embarrassed of the pics.
Of course no-one there knew anything about kilts and the happy couple were just glad that I put some effort into my outfit. I even received many compliments! But if I knew then what I know now, I would have worn a suit

Nothing wrong with going conventional if you're not comfortable with the options. But I daresay that if we never donned the kilt until our ensembles were perfect, we'd never wear them! If you're amongst a crowd of non "cognizanti", don't be afraid of making a faux pas with Highland attire. I'd rather look back on pictures of a wonderful party and remember all the smiles and compliments I got for wearing the kilt, even if it wasn't absolutely 100% properly traditional, than to look back on pictures of me wearing trousers and wish I had had the intestinal fortitude to wear the kilt despite not being perfectly up to the standards of people who weren't even there.
But it's your decision, and I'm sure you'll still have a good time either way.

Re: tie with a prince charlie?
had a great time and if I am honest my attire was utterly irrelevant when it came to it. A friend of mine from way back was teetering on the bring of kilting up but, like me, didnt...
the ghillie, kilt combo would have worked as I looked around at some peoples interpretation of 'smart' but I had a great time anyhoo.
won't be long now....

It may be a moot point by now, but just for posterity, here's another example of a standard black necktie being worn with a PC (they use that combination for advertising). The photo shows it being worn with a waistcoat, and I really think it looks OK, from a visual standpoint anyway...

I posted that same image in one of my replies to this thread (#20). It looks just OK to me... I still think a long tie with a PC would look better with a higher cut waistcoat. Or without a waistcoat at all, as you showed earlier with your mess jacket.
