Im wondering if anyone has any pictures of the dress & hunting MacLean kilts?

I'd recommend the red MacLean in the ancient or muted color scheme for a first all-around clan kilt. Those color scenes tend to go well for either day dress or evening attire. If you get a second MacLean kilt get the Hunting tartan in the ancient or muted color scheme. Really nice for daywear...I find that the modern color scheme version of the hunting tartan doesn't have enough contrast between the green and the black to really appreciate the sett of the tartan.
Best of luck,
David

This one looks nice too...

Which I'm guessing is Locharron's strome maclean hunting weathered

Don't tell Sir Sean Connery that the hunting isn't for formal wear....think its the only tartan I've seen him wear, and often to formal occasions.

True, but I wouldn't consider Sir Sean a good mentor when it comes to Highland dress. In fact, I think one would be safer to do the exact opposite of what he does.

That's a little harsh... He doesn't really do any worse than someone walking into a kilt shop off the street... Now jackie stewarts custom hose... Individualism or just wrong?

Interesting comment but I'm not sure as to the accuracy of whether there is any strict code about only wearing hunting during the day and dress, in this case the red, only during the evening or at formal events
Most clans do not have separate hunting tartans and the few clans that do don't necessarily wear it only as daywear. Perhaps something to discuss?

Had to google for a pic of those hose. Very interesting. I kinda like them.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I'm not sure there's much to discuss. I'll agree that brighter colours can be more flashy which fits with my perception of formal highland wear, but ultimately one's tartan choice is a personal aesthetic decision. What works for one will not be as comfortable for another.

They are very distinct... and given his motor racing background, I could see the red verticals being racing stripes... I'm not sure they would have worked on the bias though...

Precisely! And I might add, Sandy wears the MacLean tartan (his clan tartan - obviously) very well! Here's a pic of him and I back in May. I am wearing the Macpherson red ancient in the 16 ounce Strome tartan.

Cheers,
