If you are planning to wear the kilt ONLY for formal evening events, I would recommend that you buy a kilt of red MacLean. If, on the other hand, you plan to wear the kilt for all sorts of events and times, I would get a kilt of hunting tartan. Really, most Scottish MacLeans wear the hunting tartan most of the time ( some even exclusively ). There is nothing wrong with the red tartan; I own several. But for everyday wear, I would emulate Sir Lachlan, and get a hunting tartan kilt first.

With that kind of thinking I would never wear the red.
My feeling is, even wearing a T shirt with a kilt adds a degree of class. Every time I go out & about in my kilt I get comments. Regardless what else Im wearing.
Further to that. I own a few suits (with p@at$) that I rarely wear because there are few times were a suit is warranted. On the other hand, I often go out & about with a sport coat.
I feel that a kilt is just a clothing option. I see no reason why I cant wear it any where I choose.

Re: Hunting & Dress MacLean pix
I suspect that one of the reasons that people go with the hunting one over the red is the similarity that the red one has to royal stewart (which was one of the defacto hire tartans before the braveheart and robroy movies came out)

Look, you can wear whatever you want. I made a suggestion. You can choose to ignore it. I won't lose any sleep over it. BUT...I do know a thing or two about the Clan MacLean. I know what folks usually wear. They usually wear a kilt of hunting tartan for day to day use. If you want to wear a red one, go ahead.

"Look"? I know a lil bit bout the Clan too. I wanted pix of the 2 tartans as Iv seen very few in kilts, I didnt ask for permission. I will wear "my" tartan anywhere I want & wear it proudly.

Well, just because you "can", does not necessarily mean you should.
Like, you can wear a tux jacket with jeans and a white T-shirt, but if you show up for a formal event, hopefully, they will show you to the door.
Or, you could go to a ball game in full tails and top hat. But why?

Re: Hunting & Dress MacLean pix
Most MacLeans were the hunting tartan due to its earlier and more noted historical arrival. It's disputed as the earliest tartan. This is the main reason most of us were it instead of the red. The whole mathematical reversal issue with the Stewart probably compounded the issue. I'm not sure exactly how true all of this is, this was told to me by my Grandfather.
