    Heritage

A short while ago I said to Graham something like, I like Scotland and it's people but I'm not into the heritage thing.
Making this statement has forced me to think about it, especially as so many of you seem keen on it.
A Scottish guy not long ago said to me 'Agh the Americans are all Scottish and know all there is to know, more than me and I've lived here all my life'. This may indirectly answer my question of why I haven't looked into my own 'heritage', I'm surrounded by it or at least have been to some extent.
My Irish Grandad came over via Wales, and moved to England after gaining a Welsh bride, they lived far enough away from me that I only saw them 3 or 4 times a year. Both are now sadly dead.
My great grandad was Russian who came over in the early 1900's after the revolution, I beleive he was cossack, I'm told he lost all his family when Stalin declared amnesty for cossacks and then killed all those who admitted being cossack. He was dropped off in Edinburgh after paying for transport to America (2000miles more and I might own a burger chain) and married a Lowe (sept of McLaren), my Great Grandma who I remember. They moved to Derbyshire and he was killed down the pit when my Grandma was 18mnths.
My Grandma eventually married another Scotsman, he was killed down the pit when my mum was 18mnths old. I don't even know his second name, we don't talk about it because my Grandma still gets upset and because it wouldn't be fair on my Grandad. (He married my Grandma A couple of years after she was widowed, he's English).
There you go thats my heritage, I suppose it's not so much I'm not interested, it's more that I know a bit and some things are more trouble than they're worth.
Still it sounds better than I'm not into the Heritage thing.
Sorry it's been such a long drawn out post I was being a bit introspective.
    Cheers Rhino

    Greetings and Salutations...
I can relate with the whole "not into heritage" thing, but in my case, my heritage is kinda hard to trace back. My mom and dad were the first generation in both of their families to even have a birth certificate. Before that they were all just born in at the house and you went and had them baptised sometime before their first birthday. One side of my family is from the North Carolina mountains and the other from the N.C. swamps. Just alot of inbred hicks, a very colorful history and alot of great stories, just not a lot of records.

    thanx...Ded N. Buried

Catherine Cookson was born about 2 miles from my house. I've met her on a couple of occasions and her husband, both now deceased.

My wife knew her quite well.

Tilly Trotter was one of her heroines in a couple of her novels. I've never read any of them so don't know what the signifcance of mentioning her is.

    tilly trotter

Thanks for enlightening me Al, my education is obviously lacking in some areas. I did know Catherine Cookson was a famous romantic author but that was all.

like Al said, I seen the movie,it was a complicated story like yours, that's why I jokingly asked if you was related to tilly trotter, but i guess if I got to 'splain it, it looses some of it's impact. have you ever eaten garlic bread?
