Re: How's this for a first try?...
I am very impressed and very jealous. I have always loved that tartan, but alas I am RAF. So I can only gaze wistfully from afar.

Looks great. I agree that you should leave the belt loops off.

Outstanding job, Gunny! I'll add my vote for NO LOOPS as well. I have 1 kilt that has them...and two that don't. I find absolutely no reason for them and greatly prefer that they not be there. Barb's book is great, isn't it?? I'd be interested to hear what "modifications" you made. I'm always looking to learn things. I actually had the opportunity to teach Barb something...that I learned just through personal experience. I was quite honored to think that I had done something that she was so impressed by that she had to do a tracing of my kilt and put it in her own personal kilt-making reference binder.
On another note...I like your brown leather. The sporran front and belt appear to be pigskin. Are they? They are unique! Where did you get them?

I picked up the belt from the Scottish Country Shop. It may well be pigskin, but I can't say for sure. It's got a nice pebbly finish and a wonderfully mottled color that goes well with my tartans. The buckle's brass, from Glen Esk; I picked that up from my kiltmaker for a song. The sporran's from L&M Highland, and has the same finish as the belt. When I saw them, I couldn't NOT get them; they looked perfect together.

Gunny, wow! I'm impressed. I found that as I've expanded my kilt that has no belt loops will slowly slip out from under the belt. I miss the belt loops.

Nice work on your kilt! You wear it well, too, with the modified jacket. Good work!

I am sitting here with a huge grin on my face. You have done a fantastic job, and it gives me _enormous_ pleasure to have been a part of helping you build your kilt.

Reason: are you kidding? Barb T. likes my kilt!
