    Kilted on Vancouver Island

What a glorious weekend to be wearing a kilt!

My wife and I spent Easter weekend on BC's Vancouver Island. We flew out there to meet the daughter I had given up for adoption 20 years ago. The reunion went very well, we all had a great time. To go from being childless to "dad" so suddenly is an incredible feeling.

The weather was so nice I decided to wear my Black Watch Bear kilt on Saturday. My daughter thought it looked pretty cool, as did my aunt & uncle whom we stayed with. I was a bit worried about my uncle's reaction to the Black Watch tartan as he's a Dublin-born Irish Catholic. He thought it looked just fine.

We spent the entire day running around Victoria with my daughter, then back up to Nanaimo for supper. Within the first hour I had forgotten that I was in the kilt, and never heard a single comment or saw any odd looks at all. Same thing on Sunday. I even wore the kilt for the flight home. Very comfortable. The only comment was from the ticket agent, who said it looked nice and asked why I was all dressed up. 8)

All in all it was probably the most memorable weekend of my life.

    Kilted on Vancouver Island

    Well done, Al!
I'm happy things went so well for you. It must have been a heartwarming weekend, one to remember for the rest of your life. Congratulations, buddy. It's a girl!

Too bad about the Flames, though. It wouldn't be so bad if they had a chance tonight.
(You'd think I could leave a nice sentiment alone but I couldn't help myself.)

Hello to the boards' newest dad!!

What a great day you had, you're a real Braveheart for facing the 'rellies' in a kilt.
I hope the renewed relationship with your daughter continues to grow strong.

What was airport security like? Did you have to remove your shoes, etc.?

I remember seeing a kilted guy taking off his Sporran, coat, belt, etc. when going through security years ago, before 9/11.

Congrats, Al G....What a wonderful story. It takes some real courage to do what you did. (I'm sure I would have been shakin in my boots.) Both thumbs up.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I'm still up on cloud nine from the whole experience. I was very nervous, on a number of levels. LOL Everything worked out just fine though. My aunt & uncle loved the kilt, as did my daughter. Kudos to Bear for his fine quality kilts! Oh, and I'll totally ignore the Flames comment, Bear!

Regarding airport security, no issues whatsoever. I had to remove the fanny pack I use as a sporran, but that was all. I also left my kilt pin at home as I knew it would be an issue.

This is my daughter and I taken at the Butchart Gardens in Victoria. Today is her 20th birthday.
