I've always preferred mine right at the top of the knee--but then I don't like to wear it so high up on my chest, either; so I have to argue with the (Scottish) kilt measurer to be sure it's not too long in either direction. I think most Americans order it at a reasonable length, then wear it down at a normal beltline, and then it's too long.

Above the hips and mid knee is my preference, more "traditional" I guess. I really don't like kilts worn on the hips, it makes the whole kilt look too short.

As one who has worn kilts for over 50 years now, I have to say that I do welcome the advent of the hipster kilt. Not that I would want to wear them all the time (indeed, I don't), but they are a very welcome relief from the 'trussed up' or 'corseted' feeling one can get from the military fit and the obligatory 'rise' above the waistline that all traditional kilts had only a few years ago.

Most Scottish kiltmakers will now recommend the ideal length as being anywhere between the centre of the knee cap to the top of the knee cap. Hillwalker kilts , or those designed to be worn for country pursuits, are generally about an inch or so above the top of the kneecap. At that level, when wet and cold, the backs of the knees are unlikely to become chaffed and sore.

Unfortunately, the 'look' of kilts worn below the knee is distinctly more 'girly' or feminine than those worn on or just above the knee, in my opinion. I've never seen Miss Spears, but I imagine her 'kilts' to be somewhere around mid-thigh - if not higher!!!

BINGO Short kilts look too much like uhh... well...sk***s. Proper length and pleat depth are paramount,IMHO.

At least we have an option now of hipster or traditional, we can wear what is most comfortable for US.
