Chris.
Indeed. I like the idea of a tartan jacket with a solid colour kilt but I'd like to see it done better. In my minds eye it could work great with a more traditional look... I'm hoping someone might have pics!

Thanks, CMCG. Ah, there's a Hamish.
It is tartan in general that I have an ethical issue with wearing. I have worn a swatch of tartan that is special to me on the apron of my canvas kilt as a kilt pin of sorts, and the tartan is still special to me, but not to wear.
I don't think the plaid shirts are part of the Highland and Scottish tradition, and they are not tartan. Perhaps they are all right for me to wear with the canvas kilt.
Would it look all right to wear a bola tie with some of the plaid shirts? We used to call them lumber jack shirts when I was a kid, by the way.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I think that would be grand! With the bolo tie, make sure your plaid shirt is cut Western style with those mother-of-pearl snap buttons.

Correct, plaid shirts have nothing to do with Scottish traditions or heritage or clans or any of that. Heck, they are probably more American than anything else. No reason to shy away from them, and the patterns can really set a mood or make a look unique regardless of whether they are worn with a kilt or trousers. I've always been a plaid flannel shirt guy, and look forward to cool weather so I can wear them. They take up half my closet space.

I, too, have many plaid shirts, and will start wearing them again. I don't have any Western shirts as described...

I really like the "non-tartan" kilt. I think the tweed look awesome. I would live an outfit. Just a bit on the pricey side, but eventually I will get a "kit". All these guys look great. Each a little different and all ok by my book.
