    Knights of Mayhem

    Knights of Mayhem

I watched this program for the first time last night on National Geographic. It's a 'reality show' about modern jousting competitions. I was a little disappointed in the low-class character and downright childishness of most of the competitors featured in the program, but the jousting itself is nothing short of awesome. It takes one heck of a 'tough guy' to do that!

Anyway, last night's episode had them competing at Estes Park, Colorado. I am guessing that this somehow coincided with the big Scottish festival and Highland Games there, because they had random shots of a pipe band, guys in kilts, etc. And they kept showing a random fellow in the bleachers who was wearing a tartan bonnet, and I swear he looked familiar. Maybe a member here, I don't know.

Yeh, they should be called the "Knights of Whining Little B#tches".

I too watched this and was truned off by all the drama.

That's how ALL "reality" shows seem to play out though. They never seem to show humanity at face value but focus rather on the more despicable aspects of those involved. Except maybe shows like Extreme Makeover Home edition which is meant to be a "feel good" show.

    Re: Knights of Mayhem

On the bright side, I did check out one of the online videos at the link I posted above. I think it was called "settled on the field" or some such. It was two different competitors who started their joust with a grudge. But after it was over, they settled up as men, shook hands, declared their differences settled, and parted as friends. That's good to see.

So can anyone tell me, is jousting a part of the Estes Park Highland Games? Or was this a one-time tournament that just happened to coincide with it?

Terrible show. The premise is interesting, yet the cast are a bunch of whiners...can't watch the 'reality' drama. Estes Park, Colorado (near Ft. Collins - north of Denver) is a beautiful place, though. I used to spend quite a bit of time there in the summers - climbing, backpacking in Rocky Mountain National Park, camping, fly-fishing, mountaineering, and kayaking.

As far as sitting in front of the telly, I think I'll stick with Boardwalk Empire on HBO's, fabulous Sunday evening line up, hahaha!

    Cheers,

Heh, yeah, I became a convert to Boardwalk Empire this season. Great show, even though the subject matter is not my cup of tea.

I also admit to being a big fan of Sons of Anarchy on FX, but the season just ended, so my Tuesday evening viewing options are open. That's why I just now am seeing Knights of Mayhem. I may give it another episode or two before I make up my mind, in the hopes that the character deficiencies are overcome by the awesomeness of jousting.

What we really need is a good drama show about some portion of Highland history, with attention to detail and accuracy, yet with enough artistic license to make it interesting to viewers. I'm thinking something along the lines of The Tudors...

    Love The Tudors!

I agree! A wonderful time period in my opinion, would be the 18th-century - perhaps something called, The Jacobites, or The Stuarts? Sounds good to me! The producers and the director could make it gritty (shaky camera for battle scenes, dirty, grime, etc), fairly historically accurate (as much as Hollywood can!), and focus on pertinent details of character/plot development. Wouldn't it be so cool to see a grittier, more real version of 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie's plight, along with the tartan-clad Highlanders?!

    Cheers,

I love Boardwalk. I record Knights of Mayhem. That way, I fast forward through the drama and can just watch the jousting.
