utility/modern kilts
I'm finally looking into getting a modern styled kilt. I like Utilikilts, but the price range is a little high for me considering I mainly want one so I won't damage my traditional kilts. I found some on Got-Kilt, and Amerikilt, but I like the utility style better. Any info on non-bank breaking models or suppliers with good quality?

Might I suggest Forum Partner and member Alt.Kilt?

www.altkilt.com
I find the prices much more attractive... even though I do not own one, the folks around here that have one or two of them sing their praises..
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Utilikilts are all 25% off right now. Or you could check out Stumptownkilts.com they a have front slash pockets and two different sizes of removeable side pockets.
I like a nice short parade that ends at a bar.

Check UT Kilts they are way less expensive than Utilikilts. I believe they only sell them through E-bay

UT kilts has their own web site and are actually a few bucks cheaper than on their ebay store. http://www.utkilts.com/

I've been a little concerned if the cotton twill is not heavy enough. I've never seen a utility style in person, but they seem fairly light weight. Are they year round wear?

There's also something to say for custom made... the following will make CUSTOM kilts. Both in cloth / pocket options as well as made to your measurements:
Freedom Kilts (steve the owner also owns this forum)
Alt Kilt - forum sponsor and member
R Kilts - form member and nice guy

I have one from Celtic Croft www.kilts-n-stuff.com and am very happy with it. Also own an Amerikilt that I use for yard work. The one from Celtic Croft is heavier than the Amerikilt.

Re: utility/modern kilts
1. I've seen and held and inspected Freedom Kilts, both tartan models and the casual model in a solid twill. They are built like the proverbial tank. The workmanship is first quality. The thing is going to last for a LONG time, unless you set the damn thing on fire.
2. I've seen and inspected an R-kilt. all that stuff I wrote up there about Freedom kilts? The same thing goes for an R-Kilt, and in addition to that you get some cool leatherwork.
I would be delighted to own either of their products, and I've made about 40 kilts over the past four years.
I've handled and inspected the non-tartan offerings from Sportkilt and they are just fine. They're nothing like #1 and #2 up there, but they're fine. I'd wear one, no problem.
Finally, if all this is just too much money, then why not make your own? It's nowhere near as hard as you think. Literally dozens of X-Kilts have been made by forum members over the past four years, and probably hundreds more have been made by people who just downloaded the instructions and never said a word. Go to the DIY forum, there's a link at the top to the 2nd edition of the instructions. It will cost you about $20 in materials and 13-18 hours of your time. All you need is a kitchen table, a sewing machine, someone to show you how to use the machine, and some patience.
