    Tartan tie

    Hello all,

Just curious about wearing a tartan tie with my kilt. I've seen some mention of it and saw a pic of Sean Connery wearing one. Any ideas?

Paul, opinions differ. Some of us think it's a bit much, others think it's fine. It really is a matter of personal taste although I think if you are going to wear a tartan tie with a tartan kilt they should be the same tartan. As for Sir Sean, well, he can wear whatever he darn well wants to wear and get away with it.

Like Bubba said, some of us on the forum like matching tartan ties with kilts and some of us are diametrically opposed to the idea.

I always thought that matching tartan ties look good. However I had read that they are not considered appropriate in Scotland and I was worried about seeming disrespectful to Scottish people if I told them that in America they are considered appropriate. Once I saw Sir Sean Connery wearing his, though I decided that rather than telling anyone "It's ok in America." I could tell them "Sean Connery does it."

Bubba says that Sir Sean Connery can get away with anything wearing whatever he likes. I would argue that Sir Connery is of such status that not only does it make it ok for him to dress as he pleases, but if he does it, it makes it ok for anyone else as well.

My clan chief wears a matching tartan tie with his kilt, so that's good enough for me.

It was explained to me that the argument against the tartan tie was that very often, tartan ties are made with a miniature version of a given tartan. When worn with a kilt, the patterns clash. Personally, I get the feeling that it is just the current trend not to do it. I am actively looking for a suitable tartan tie alternative...ie. plain colored tie that doesn't clash. Trends are often arbitrary and bereft of logic. Maybe Sir Connery will prove to be a tartan tie trend setter.

try one on, if you think it's ok wear it, I have seen many scots wear matching ties and bow-ties.
some of the kilt nazis round here may tell you it's not ok..but I make all the rules now and I say it's ok.
the only one I didn't like was a bright blue and yellow kilt with a matching tie,bit hard on the eyes, I think black watch or some other dark or not too bright tartan would look ok with a matching tie, even royal stewart looks ok with a tie.

    Tartan Ties

    Tartan ties........NOOOOOoooooooo

Awful things, manufactured purely for the tourists. I put them in the same category as tartan hose.

Of course, you can wear what you fancy (get out clause!) but I hate them. Not so bad with a suit and pants.......but why would you want to detract from the kilt. Tartan hose and ties tend to 'smudge' the look.

Plain hose or socks. Plain tie. Compliment the colours. Easy huh?

    BRAVO!

As always Al. words of such wisdom.

I do wear tartan ties in my own Clan tartan, but only with my plain "TFCK" kilts and kilt suits - NEVER with a tartan kilt.

Blu, for a non-clashing non-tartan tie you might take a look at the ties at http://www.mcrok.com/shopexd.asp?id=14 or the ties at http://www.scottishlion.com/kiltiesflas.html
