    Re: Next project - glues?

Actually 'rubber cement' sold in the UK, normaly 'Evo-stick', is a contact cement.

I used to work as a shoe repairer and we used to smear the stuff on the new sole and the cleaned/roughened sole. We'd let it dry to tacky, heat slightly, place the new sole on the shoe, press and trim.
And thinking back, we did use it on leather soles before stitching.

    Thanks guys.
    Martin.

I'm not sure what you mean by "pro-VOC"? We do use products that have VOCs, but it's not like we have holidays dedicated to them.

Modern society would come to a screeching halt without VOCs. So it's not like they can be banned entirely, or even strictly limited. Is it a tradeoff between health and utility? Of course it is. But virtually everything in life is.

    Re: Next project - glues?

There is a big discussion going on in another forum I belong to totally unrelated to this topic about different types of glue. None of what they are talking about would suit your purpose.

I do recall using an aerosol adhesive designed for upholstery work that might work for your application. It was available at auto parts supply stores. Can't remember the brand name off hand.

    Re: Next project - glues?

    A couple of thoughts:

There are aerosol sprays used by people in the display industry. A quick spray on the back allows them to put pictures/posters/charts and the like on walls and display boards. At the end of the day the item could be easily pealed off the wall with no damage to either. if memory serves it is called 'Tacky something'. If you want to position two parts before stitching, this could be the way to go.

The second thought is that glued leather is almost impossible to stitch. The glue will grab the needle every time and you might need a pair of pliers to get the job done.

    Good luck with your project.

    Regards

    Chas

The 'sticky stuff' may be photo mount - might be an idea.

What I was thinking was stitching the leather then glueing the fur after?
