The Clan Gunn Heritage Centre and Museum is not far from where I live. I must visit sometime. Although not a Gunn myself, they together with the Sinclairs are the two major clans in Caithness.

Hullo Mr. Gunn! I can't answer your question, but am sure that someone will very shortly. You already belong to the clan, perhaps just not the clan association. Meanwhile, welcome to the Great Rabble! Rev'd Father Bill White: Mostly retired Parish Priest & former Elementary Headmaster. Lover of God, dogs, most people, joy, tradition, humour & clarity. Legion Padre, theologian, teacher, philosopher, linguist, encourager of hearts & souls & a firm believer in dignity, decency, & duty. A proud Canadian Sinclair with solid Welsh and other heritage.

I am curious as to why you refer to Clan Societies as "artificial". They serve an important function in our dispersed Clan populations. The Clan Gunn Society (UK), while not actually headed up by the Commander, Gunn of Banniskirk, does consider him to be the rallying point for the Society. Iain is active in Society affairs as well. The immediately past-president of the Clan Gunn Society of North America, Rich Gunn, is now the International Representative for Banniskirk, who has decided he can no longer be the globe trotter he once was.
