AH! you didn't mention the color of your jacket, only the style. I think we were all assuming more of a tweed daywear jacket. Personally I think it would look fine with a charcoal tweed jacket as long as it was (1) fairly thin (you don't want a bulky look), (2) a solid color, and (3) a color that pulls out something from the kilt and 'pops" from the charcoal color (black on gray can look smashing, black on charcoal looks muddled to my eyes.
I look forward to you sharing a picture of your outfit

Re: Pullover sweater vests
Thank you, thank you... actually it's an odd shade - dark grey verging towards charcoal. The advice is good! I'm sure that the choice of colour will dress it up or down somewhat too.

Re: Pullover sweater vests
A nice red should look nice with charcoal, I woukd think.
Edit: oops. I see you said subtle. No worries. I think there is enough evidence pisted here to show that a nice sweater or sweater vest do indeed look nice under a tweed jacket.

Re: Pullover sweater vests
Here is an Argyle sweater vest I purchased on Ebay. It is wool cotton blend and thin enough to wear under a jacket. My jacket is a charcoal tweed. The sweater is spruce green, burgundy and grayish brown. It lets me mix with burgundy or spruce kilt hose. Worn here with my Hamilton Gray kilt from Heritage of Scotland. Adds a bit of color to the gray kilt and charcoal jacket without being too loud.

OF course I have quite a few pull over sweaters, long sleeve, in various burgundy, copperbrown, and my favorite ragg wool. I wear them quite casual with my SWK Weathered McKenzie or my Saffron kilt.

Re: Pullover sweater vests
The sweater vest with a kilt is a great look, as evidenced in the photos below. For a different look, maybe a bit of a very fine cable knit in a sweater vest would work, too? How about a soft, buttery yellow to go with the charcoal?
And, Jamie, how DID you find that sweater that goes so well with the Isle of Skye? It's perfect!
