Here's my two bits about wearing a tartan tie with a kilt.
I've noticed that if someone wears a tartan tie with their kilt, but wears a closed jacket (Prince Charlie or Argyll), that it doesn't look too bad. However, when there's no jacket, or the jacket is open, it doesn't look very good. The reason is that the tartan of the tie is always at an angle which goes very contrary to the tartan layout of the kilt. It makes the tartans clash and look really bad (Especially if the tie is touching the kilt - the contrasting patterns could make one dizzy!)
So, I'm a little late posting on this one, but that's my opinion, for what it's worth.
