Cool CMcG's Adventures in Hong Kong

I'm on exchange at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for the 2011-2012 school year and would like to share some pics with everyone. I'm not going to create a photo journal here, but rather will just post some of the kilt/sartorial highlights.

First up is a shot from the Vice-Chancelor's Dinner Party. On my left is the Scottish Nobel Laureate Sir James Mirrlees and on my right is the host, Dr. Joseph Sung. The dress code was "semi-formal or national costume," so I chose to do what many Canadians do under such circumstances and wore the attire of my ancestors, not my citizenship. Please, let's not get into another discussion about that choice; the Vice-Chancelor and Sir James were pleased with my turnout!

Earlier in the evening, I performed a Chinese Lion Dance as the representative from my college's kung fu club. That's my lovely ladyfriend playing the drum.

It was after the Lion Dance that I changed into my kilt.

My lass changed into her Chinese dress, again in deference to her heritage and despite her Canadian citizenship.

    With my Japanese hostel-mate.

And with some of the Korean girls.

More photos to come once I sort them and get them uploaded.

And thanks for the good captions.
I was under the impression you did the Lion Dance while wearing the kilt for some reason... very interesting.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

There were many jokes that night about wearing the kilt while lion dancing or perhaps having a lion with tartan in its colour scheme

I love the idea of having everyone trot out their national/hereditary dress! Seems that so many distinctive traditions get swallowed up by modernity and globalization, and modes of dress seem to be the first to go. I especially like the pictures of the hanboks--I spent a fair bit of time in South Korea and I looked forward going to weddings, if only to see the men and women in their traditional clothes.

And, frankly, I can imagine few other gentleman I'd rather have representing the kilt. You did your country, heritage, and fellow X-markers proud!
