Welcome, from a stormy and oh so wet Inverness-shire.

Re: Newbie from Virginia by way of Afghanistan
Thanks for all the words of welcome, gents. It seems I have indeed stumbled onto a great place. I appreciate your concerns for my safety, but my days of riding around in the back of a gun truck in the middle of the night are long over. At this point in my life I think I'm far more at risk driving on the Beltway than I am here. Cheers!

Re: Newbie from Virginia by way of Afghanistan
Chas, my hometown (place of birth, anyway) is Norfolk, Virginia, across the Elizabeth River from Portsmouth and the bay from Hampton, down the road from Williamsburg and Yorktown. You'd never know it was settled by Englishmen...

Re: Newbie from Virginia by way of Afghanistan
from Chicago. My mother's and father's families both came initially to Virginia in the 17th century. Like you I'm a mutt - Scots, English, Irish, Welsh, French, German and Dutch. My mother's home town was Culpeper. I think she always thought of herself as a Virginian first and an American second.
