Help! Title of Bagpipe music in "Gunga Din"
I spent the weekend with my Dad, and we were talking old movies, including a mutual favorite, "Gunga Din". At a climatic scene, the Regiment is marching to the rescue, not realizing they are marching into an ambush. As old movie buffs know, Gunga Din sounds the alarm on his bugle and the day is saved. Our question to the rabble is, what is the tune being played on the bagpipes just before the bugle sounds. My Dad says the at least some of the words are "poor Charlie's off to war, will he ere come back again..." but neither of us can place the title or any more words.
Can the Great Rabble help?

From the website The Bagpipes go to the Movies:
Gunga Din - 1939 120 minutes. An RKO Radio picture, this film is directed by George Stevens and stars Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Sam Jaffe. It is the story of three happy-go-lucky British sergeants in India at the time of the outbreak of the Thugs against the English troops. It contains a piping scene in which the tunes 'Will Ye No Come Back Again' and 'Piobaireachd of Donald Dhu' are played. The rescuing 42nd Highlander replacements come just in the nick of time (while actor Sam Jaffe, playing Gunga Din is atop a golden dome) and the regiment can be heard approaching from afar to the sound of the 42nd Highlanders. The pipes return during the final funeral with 'Lord Lovat's Lament'. The piping is supposed to be very good.
The website does not appear to be maintained any longer (I've sent a couple of things in to be added and never got a reply, nor have I seen the info posted).

One of my top ten, all time favorite movies. I like to say that my blessed mother believes that any movie that has bagpipes in it deserves an Oscar nomination.
Si Deus, quis contra? Spence and Brown on my mother's side, Johnston from my father, proud member of Clan MacDuff!
