Re: US Marine Memorial Tartan Advice (Sett or Stripe)?

As a former active-duty Marine NCO, I would pleat to the stripe, particularly the double gold stripe. I do not own a kilt in this specific tartan, and I'm afraid I never will, but it is a lovely sett. It is a 'military' tartan in a way, and military (Army/Regimental) kilts are always pleated to the line (stripe). However, I suppose the Leatherneck tartan is more of a tribute to the U.S. Marine Corps, so pleating options are completely up to the personal taste of the wearer!

Fellow XMTS member, David Pope, also a former active-duty Marine, has (or had?) a kilt in the Leatherneck tartan, however, I believe he had his box-pleated. Perhaps he will contribute to the discussion at some point. He may be a good person to ask for advice.

I have a box pleat in Leatherneck from Barb Tewksbury. It's pleated to the gold-red-gold thin stripes. I've worn it to 3 Marine Birthday Balls, Memorial Day parades and other occasions. I think it looks very sharp. I don't seem to have any photos that show the pleats, I'm afraid. Here's a photo of it from the 2010 Ball

I'm sorry, but John Paul Jones did not found the U S Marine Corps. That was done by Captain Samuel Nicholas at Tuns Tavern in Philadelphia, PA, 10 Nov 1775.

    Respectfully,

Perhaps they should have amended the wording to reflect Jones's service with Marines during his time with the American Navy:

You are spot on, Todd! Wow, I can't believe such an error was made. Captain Samuel Nicholas was our first Commandant of the Marine Corps, obviously. However, Captain Nicholas was not entirely responsible for the birth of our beloved Marine Corps, it was the Continental Congress that called up a 'Corps of Marines' (which was composed of only a small battalion at the time) in order to protect our American Naval ships from British bombardment. The Marine Corps is now, and pretty much as always been, a Department of the Navy, arguably the 'men's department!'

The Marines of the 18th-century, would often position themselves high up on the ship's riggings and 'snipe' out the enemy on opposing Naval vessels. This was the basis and early formation of our unique sharpshooting heritage, and the phrase, "Every Marine is a Rifleman," sums up that distinct mentality quite well.

    Semper Fidelis,
