Re: The dichotomy: the "Edgy" old guy just looks silly
I'm 51. I've noticed that what goes around comes around. If I hold on to my clothes long enought, they'll be "almost" in fashion...again! I have two wool kilts, a PV and hemp Rkilt. I had the same question when I asked Robert intially if the Rkilt might look weird on a then 50 year old (assuming--wrongly!--that a more contemporary kilt might be best suited for the younger set). I kind of chuckle about that now. He said something like the demographic for the Rkilt is 35 and up, including his 83 year old father. Now I haven't got the "boot-thing" going... yet. But why not?! I've come to appreciate that while there are some fashion trends in kilt wear based on certain styles and expressions, the garment itself is rather timeless and therefore, in my mind, it matters not how old we are or what style of kilt we wear. While I love my tartan and PV kilts, my hemp is by far my "day-wear" kilt. Heck just washed it, clothes-pinned the pleats and hung it to dry. Treated the leathers, too and... voilá good as new. It works for me at 51 and no one has said it's "weird". May be they thought it. But then, who cares what people think as long as I'm being me. Good on you! Go for it!

I find it annoying that those '70s styles now only seem to be in style for women. I would buy them if they were being made to fit men. Women's flares are OK, but they make the pockets too small! (No, I am not going to wear a sporran with jeans!) And yet try to find any men's ones and see how much luck you have.

A few years back, when the 70's stuff was really making a big comeback, I read a great column in a smallish Minnesota newspaper wherein the author said to his kids, "We wore those awful clothes so that you wouldn't have to."

Yeah, it crosses my mind that I might be acting a bit "Eccentric" but wearing a kilt in this country is sort of the definition of eccentric. As folks have gotten used to me by now I have a lot of lattitude for strange behavior.
In fact, it might be time to re-order another one of these.

This thread is making me thirsty!
My fave beer: free and cold.
COLD?! Cold beer is for the ones when you want to numb your taste buds becasue the flavor is not that great. About 50 degrees F is best, if you're drinking good beer. I do agree that free improves the taste of any brew.

I have a troupe of young friends who wear these. They keep threatening to get me one, as well...

Re: The dichotomy: the "Edgy" old guy just looks silly
Talk about life being interconnected. My handle Seanmadra means old dog in Irish and I selected it as a joke to myself. This afternoon I raced from my jacket and tie job to USA Kilts to pick up a few items. On the way home, while mulling over the multitude of possible future tartans and accessories to purchase, I considered the fact that some, including my siblings look at me askew when I wear the kilt. During a bit of introspection I asked myself, am I too old for all of this....NAH! Shared some pizza with my bride, finished a bottle of Old Dog Brown Ale (from Smuttynose in New Hampshire), and then I see this thread about dichotomy. I wear the tie at work because that is expected but I wear what I want at home because it's comfortable, and well, because I want to. BTW, I'll be 50 in about 361 days and the most recent birthday went by without a glance, grimace, or torn muscle crawling out of bed. But there is always tomorrow.

Ummmmm, I've bought purple eyeshadow and wrinkle cream in the same transaction... As well as VANS and SPANX in the same day. Clearly I'm in denial of the ever so-close 40's!

Hell, at your age wrinkle cream is a prophylactic and purple eyeshadow is for fun. At least you get to apply it yourself--the last time I had purple around my eye it wasn't by my own hand.
