Real Zebra Hide Dress Sporran on Ebay
I know that the real zebra hides are pretty rare, and I have only seen one sporran in real zebra, and even that was in a picture. Well, here is your chance to own one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Zebr...item43ac2a47ba
Price is not entirely unreasonable, and for a used item it sure appears in great shape. And it comes with a bonus staghorn handle sgian dhub built into the side of the sporran itself. Such a deal. Be the envy of your friends--heck, probably the whole forum.
Now the only question is, Buy it Now and pay the price or start the bidding and hope nobody jumps on the bandwagon and runs it up even higher. Arrgh, the indecision. And no I do not have any affiliation with the seller in this auction. Just thought others might be interested as I am.
Trivia question: Even though we all know that real zebras are not white and black striped but actually white and deep brown striped hair, can anybody tell me what color their hide is UNDER the fur (the actual skin color)? White? Brown? Black? White and brown striped like the hair? Or something else? Let the games begin. Oh, and using Wikipedia or Ask.com is for wimps.

Re: Real Zebra Hide Dress Sporran on Ebay
well, I know the coat is black with white stripes, so I'll go with black....
Looking at that sporran, what's with the knife? is the sheath built in or something?

Re: Real Zebra Hide Dress Sporran on Ebay
I would think the hide would be brown at first, but for some reason I remember reading that they were pink.
It is an interesting looking sporran, and one that I could see myself bidding on something similar, although that side sheath is a little odd and of course Zebra's don't have antlers (lol). I am not sure enough about it to put in a bid on this one.

Some Zebra is subject to CITES restrictions.
It looks like the vendor has some other ones too... Full face aligator anyone?
As far as the Q about skin colour, I think that it can be either dark or pink... The hair colour is like human hair and has pigmentation... or pigmentation inhibitor in the case of white

Just for general information, Zebra is listed as a fur choice for any of the Ferguson Brit sporrans.
Here is Ferguson Brit himself sporting one!

I must say that I'm not a huge fan of the tassels, the proportions are very odd.
Especially when paired with the knife riding "outboard".

Maybe it was that rarest of fantastical beasties- the Unibra! striped with a single horn.

Re: Real Zebra Hide Dress Sporran on Ebay
Apparently, the side sheath is not uncommon amongst zebra sporrans, as Mr Britt has it, too.
While Zebra hides are expensive, now and then a damaged one turns up and there may well be enough salvageable hide left for a sporran front. It might be interesting to catch up with someone who repairs zebra rugs and see if he or she has some scraps.

Re: Real Zebra Hide Dress Sporran on Ebay
I've been watching this seller's items and they seem to be of inferior quality. Look closely at the back of the sporran. It's that same high shine leatherboard that cheap imported sporrans use. His cantles are all comparable to those on cheap sealskin sporrans and the fellow doesn't know that full mask sporrans usually don't include fur on the back side of the sporran.
This sporran, in particular, looks cobbled together and made-up. I suspect that the sheath is a direct result of the maker seeing the photo of Lamar in his zebra sporran and not realizing that the knife sheath is not attached to the sporran. On top of that, he doesn't even have a clue as how sporran tassles are attached- the chain goes through a hole in the front of the sporran and then is attached to the split ring. On top of that it looks like he ran out of the decorative chain he was using and substituted a piece of leather lace. Geez...
My guess is that it's some guy who fancies himself a sporran maker and has access to a fur supplier, so he's going wild.
I'd recommend you steer clear. I bet that upon inspection this is a sporran that has been "frankensteined" with a different front covering. Same for the older Sheffield sgian dubh and reworked sheath.
