Carry On Up The Khyber

I know many of our stateside friends may not be familiar with the series of "Carry On" films but for us Brits they were an institution for many years- basically low budget movies with a penchant for slightly smutty humour, though not smutty enough to call the heavyweight sensors in.
"Carry On Up The Khyber" was one such film, made in 1968, it featured a British (fictional) Highland regiment named the "3rd Foot And Mouth" stationed in Afghanistan near the Khyber Pass (hence the films title), set at a time when India was still under British rule. The British soldiers in the film all wore kilts and pith helmets (with the exception of Roy Castle toward the end who put on a pair of tartan trews, no doubt emulating the officers' mess dress of the period). The costumes apparently had been obtained by the Pinewood studios wardrobe dept from the people who had made the film "Tunes Of Glory" eight years earlier, the tartan being the subject of some contention, it was either the "Brown Scott" or it had been made specifically for that earlier film, was wondering if the rabble may care to discuss the films in question?

Haven't seen a Carry on film in 35 years. Perhaps I should add them to my collection.

The "Dinner scene" in .........Up the Khyber is hilarious and a classic and is to be seen near the end of the film.

As a kid the long running joke about the 'tiffin' had me really confused...

The movie makes "The Question" of vital national importance as it shows how the natives can be kept down until they find out someone had cheated.

Watched a lot of the Carry On films as a kid, on "British Sunday Theater" here in the Pacific Northwest. It primed me for Monty Python.

Just bought the box set of all of the Carry Ons... (for Sunday viewing.)

The proverbial seaside postcard in movie form...

The scene in 'Carry on Camping' where Barbara Windsor loses her bikinin top and Kenneth Williams' 'Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in-for-me' from Carry on Cleo must count as two of the most memorable moments in cinematic history.

The scripts' humour was very seaside postcard, but rather endearing.

The 3rd Foot and Mouth were fighting the Burpas - but Carry on Up the Khyber was rather less frothy than most of the carry ons - almost as thought they were trying take the script seriously.
