    Antler point kilt pin advice

I have a question. I've been seeing pics online of Victorian era grouse foot kilt pins, and I decided to make a kilt pin from and antler point. So my question is whether or not that would only be acceptable to wear with a historic kilt pattern like a belted plaid, or if it's acceptable with any kilt.

I have one i wear often. I like it with my weathered tartans and more earthtone look. Also brown leather sporran and belt. Im not too worried about appropriate rather i like certain looks that go well together.

I made an antler point kilt pin. It looks fine (I think) and my third sgian came out OK. 50 grams is really too heavy for a kilt pin.

If you decide to cap the pith end of you antler point with poor mans pewter, I suggest first capping the antler pith with some epoxy. I think what happened to me was the hot metal melted the pith away making a bigger deeper cavity than I expected - and thus a heavy pin.

If I was to do it again (I don't wear kilt pins at all anymore) I would shoot for probably 20-30 grams total. Right at or just under one ounce, tops.

Edit: I wore my antler tip kilt with a modern kilt, no problem. Definitely fine with brown leathers, and most likely perfectly Ok with black leathers (shoes and sporran) as well.

Kilt pins with the belted plaid or any kilt where you are trying to give the impression that you are in a period prior to the Victoria era is incorrect. Kilt pins did not come about until the Victorian period. As for the antler pin, there are a number of members that have antler kilt pins, in fact pins in every conceivable design to wear with their traditional style kilts (knife, box, etc)

Great! Thanks for all the info. I never even thought of the idea of them not being used prior to the Victorian era.

I have considered tipping it, but I have a lot of antler points from when I cut them for flintknapping, so I'm sure I'll make more. Living in Florida has me wearing a lighter fabric more often than not, so I usually wear a kilt pin almost always. Hehe.
