Do I see a belt with a waistcoat in that magazine photo?

Definitely a belt but I think it is over a velvet doublet. But should we not be asking the more serious question? Namely what is someone who was born and lives in England doing wearing a kilt in the Lowlands of Scotland? This is surely a matter to exercise our Highland compatriots as we are well aware of the views they hold on such unsuitable behaviour.

I think what you are seeing, Trevor, is a waist belt worn over a closed velvet doublet.

I suppose it demonstrates that whatever his future Highland subjects may, or may not think, he is entitled to plough his own furrow. He will not be the first member of the British Monarchy, Scots too, not to worry too much about what the Highlanders think.

Some of the checkered topped hose can be ordered from Macdonald Sporrans at buyakilt.com. I have bought a few things from them so far and have been very ploeased with the service and the product.

The picture is somewhat dark so we will have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

And Phil - well the Her late Majesty, the Queen Mother was born in England yet she would not have thanked anyone for not thinking her to be Scottish and Princess Margaret was born at Glamis yet perhaps had less contact with Scotland than most of her English born relatives.

Place of birth is obviously not the whole story...

Trefor this is the same doublet that Charles wears regularity, here are a couple of other photos of it:

I think taken together these dispel any myth that HRH is wearing anything but a doublet with a belt outside.

Bearing in mind that there was no union of crowns in 1603 but the continuation of the Stuart dynasty over both nations, the pre-existing custom in Scotland must still exist requiring the expressed will and wishes of the people of Scotland - a quite different situation from that in England.
I know there are doubts also about the English Parliament being supreme in Scotland under the 1707 Act of Union too.
Ah yes, this all brings to memory the famous decision in the case of McCormick versus HM Advocate and the Lord President, Lord Cameron's opinion (Obiter Dicta)
