Kentucky Colonel tartan?

I'm a bit curious, as I've not been able to find the tartan or whether or not it even exists. is there such a tartan for the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to anyone's knowledge? And if not, is there an equivalent for similar types of groups or titles?

To my knowledge, there's not a KY Colonels tartan. A search of both the Scottish Tartan Authority ("STA") and the Register of Tartans ("Register") using the keyword 'Kentucky' does not turn anything up.

There is a Commonwealth of Kentucky tartan. Per the STA, it is the State of Kentucky (District) tartan.

The Register also has the 'State of Kentucky' tartan.

I'm sure there are tartans that have been registered by various associations of a similar nature to the KY Colonels. If you're wanting to create one, perhaps the Commonwealth of KY tartan could/should be a starting point, since it is the official state tartan, per Gov. Paul Patton.

Why would a Kentucky Colonel want to wear something other than the official Kentucky state tartan (other than their own clan tartan that is)?

Arkansas has two tartans. I believe one of them is called the "Arkansas Traveller".

***, and yes, Arkansas has two tartans, although neither has been officially recognized by the Arkansas State Legislature. "The Natural State" tartan, designed by Dr. Phil Smith, was quasi-recognized by former Gov. Huckabee in the late 1990s, but the joint resolution that recognized both tartans (as a compromise measure) failed to pass with enough votes.

Were you, perchance, referring to the "Arkansas Traveller" certificate, SD? <grin>

Iowa also has two tartans, one being a "dress" variant, but the "regular" Iowa state tartan is more popular.

Why, yes...yes, I was. It was the first that sprang to mind of "similar types of groups or titles". Well, right after "Duke of Hazard" anyway.

I guess I was curious, as I'm a KY Colonel but am not FROM Kentucky, so was more interested in something pertaining directly to the Order itself, instead of just the state, if that makes any sense at all.

What I guess is more appropriate, perhaps, would just to wear the Colonel lapel pin, or the Aid-de-Camp pin of a Colonel, while wearing whatever tartan I'd normally wear, then. That's what I'd do usually, but was looking into the idea of a more specialized tartan.

Thanks for all the input and info though! Definitely some things to look into, for sure.

I'd go with the lapel badge; I sometimes wear a Texas Navy one to discreetly ID me as a member of the Texas Navy Association.

If I may be so bold to ask, but what exactly is the difference between a Kentucky Colonel and an ADC? Is that an "out-of-state" resident?

In the Texas Navy Association, only residents of Texas may join as Commanders & Lieutenants, but anyone may appointed as an Admiral by the Governor of Texas.

More generally, I would say that the Aid de Camp is one of ambassadorial title for a Colonel, as it is more specifically meant to mean an assistant or aid to the Governor. But within the context of the Colonels, it is more one of one that means to promote the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as an aid in that respects, as well as to promote charity organizations. Originally the title of ADC was given to those directly assisting the Governor, and is still used within those contexts for staff members, but the Colonels are an honorary group, and as such, focus more on the charity aspects and the "good name" of the state, in a sense.

I hope that made sense, and that's my paraphrase of the ideas behind it. Being a part of the Colonel title as the ADC is, it also gives one the right to wear the uniform of the ADC if one is a Colonel (the braided rope on the mess jacket shoulder, etc.) symbolizing one's duty of service and assistance.
