That's what I was trying to say. Thanks, T.H.

    Re: Perspective

LOL and I take pride in wearing my Leatherneck tartan, for obvious reasons, being a Marine and all... but I would not wear another service tartan... well, till I saw the O'Saffron... the tartan worn by the Royal Irish Regiment of Canada. I had it made in a four yard box pleat, so it would not be the same as the Regiment wears it.

    Re: Perspective

I miss three things in this thread,
1.Jamie describes a discussion regarding a kilt but my browser cant show the pics. Did it really happen ??
    2. Had we pics of this Blue and Gold kilt we could have a good discussion identifying the tartan.
    3. I cant find pics of the cigar.

Nah. If you like it, buy it.

From a Marine perspective and out of sheer curiosity, what do you think of a 'civilian' wearing the leatherneck.

Would you be bothered by it, pleased or indifferent?

There are tartans that are meaningful to me that I have declined to order and wear because the tartan is NOT pleasing to me. I've yet to buy a tartan kilt with a tartan I didn't like just because of the tartan's meaning.
So I like the way that dancer thinks.
This is why I passed on the Polaris Tartan...found a good deal, I am a former Submariner, but the tartan just doesn't appeal to me.

P.S My first kilt was a phillabeag in Robertson tartan: my father was Robert=> I, being Robert's son, felt it was appropriate.

Pesonally, I have no issue with it...it is an unofficial tartan... yes, it holds meaning to me, and it makes me happy to see others wearing it...be it that they are Marines, or in honor of a Marine, or The Marines... I would have issue if it was worn in a disrespectful manner...

As a Marine, the only thing I am dead set upon, is the wearing of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, and using the title of Marine... those are things that are official and are earned by each and every Marine.

I think most branches of the US Armed Services would feel that way. I served in the Army but the tartan is not "officially" ours so I don't hold it as exclusive to dogfaces. Honor, Respect, and Support is all good to go as more than ample reason to wear the tartan. It specifically identifies with the branch but does not make any other claims on the face of it like kit that is emblazoned with "ARMY".
I would wear the Leatherneck tartan in memory of my schoolmate who died while serving. Also I went to a mixed service AIT at Aberdeen Proving ground and I trained and worked closely with Marines and would wear it as a token of my love and respect for them (bless you Gunny Thompson). Out of the same respect I would never wear the EGA in any form or even the 8 point utility covers.

I've read that, in some instances, and in the simplest of terms, a person can become part of a clan simply by pledging themselves to the Chief and through him, to the Clan. I've seen what it takes to keep our green machine rolling and a whole lot of them are wearing denim, so to speak. They are no less dedicated to troop support because they don't wear the uniform. I've enough room to have no problem with someone saluting those who serve in uniform by wearing what is essentially a non-service identifier.

Agreed. Still I wonder. How would we feel if Leatherneck tartan became as wide spread as say Black Watch, which is a uniform component? I have a Black Watch kilt, and I don't have any problem wearing it. And once past that little outbreak of unpleasantness in the late 1700's and early 1800's, we are allies. But it is often worn in ways that sadden me.
