First Kilt help
Hy, Well I finally moved back from Japan and such and am looking in to getting myself a kilt. My girlfriend used to be very anti kilts saying she didn't want me to wear a skirt. But at the Ren fest I tried one on and she actually seemed to like me in it so it's a go ahead now here's where the troubles start.
I like the modern Kilt more with the pockets for the everyday causal wear, there just to replace my jeans 1 or 2 a week for now till I really see how it is wearing them on a day to day basis. I was at Michigan's Ren fest and found a really comfy one that was Black. I'm not sure of the material cause well honestly I just don't remember things like that but I think it was Denim maybe? I had the guy's card but I lost it when I went overseas for a few months. So I could use some help on finding a good set. Money is a issue for me. I'm a teacher so I can't really afford the 200-700 dollar kilts that most people on here seem to prefer.
I was hoping someone could recommend some good websites or maybe even stores in Michigan. I know his cost were around 60.00-70.00 in that general price range. which is more affordable for where I'm at right now I can go a little higher but not to much just cause of whats going on with schools right now, I'm not sure when the district pay checks will bounce. (it's almost happened a few times in Michigan now.)

Re: First Kilt help
I would seriously give these people a look. Slightly higher than your price range, I know.

I've had two of their acrylic kilts and the lightweight was my favourite for the longest time.
The alternative is to wait (very hard) and go to all the faires you can, in the hope of picking up a bargain.

You sound like a Utilikilts man. www.utilikilts.com
When you're shopping, just remember you can have any two of price, quality, or service.
When you select a company do a search on them here first - sadly, there are sharks waiting for new guys.
The most important part of a kilt is the thread that holds it together. Sadly that's also where some cheap kiltmakers cut corners.
Enjoy your new FREEDOM....
And, to further sell your girlfriend on kilts...leave it on when...you know....

Hi kaz, welcome to XMTS.
Stillwater makes some nice "entry level" kilts, with the economy models falling within your price range. Their standards are just a bit more if you don't care for any of the patterns on the economy ones. The kilts they offer are more traditional rather than modern though.

Re: First Kilt help
Kaz,
Good to see another Michigander here. I was at the Ren Fest last year and saw two different stands selling kilts. The one I think you're talking about sold the contemporary style, like Utilikilts. I'll see if I have the card, just might.
If you have your heart set on that kind of thing people here have suggested, to me anyways. Check ebay for some used Utilikilts and kiltmart have a few. Of course if you want to get your hands dirty you can make an X-kilt, the pattern is free on the forums. It looks to be a great and cheap way to get a kilt.
I personally would like to get a more traditional style kilt and have found that Stillwater Kilts has the best prices and seems to be very highly rated here. It's at least worth checking to see what you think. Cause I'm more for solid colors and love the Irish Saffron look.

Re: First Kilt help
Hi Kaz,
Another thought is for you to use one of the kiltmaker websites and measure yourself.
Then post the measurements here.
Many times the members on here have found that their kilts have "shrunk in the closet" and may be willing to pass them on to you at a fraction of the new cost.

Re: First Kilt help
They're not my cup of tea but we do have a group of enthusiasts here called Chicago Men In Kilts...great bunch of guys, met them at the Chicago Kilt Run and keep trying to make it to their monthly beer night but never seem to make it.
Anyway...they're on facebook and someone recently posted this:

...and gave them a good recommendation.
G'luck.

Re: First Kilt help
Kaz,
Today might be your lucky day... and mine by proxy. But in doing a Google search of vendors that were at the 2011 Michigan Ren Fest. I found Got Kilt! The link goes to their modern selection but they do have some traditional styles, and the pricing is what I remember anyways from the festival.
Hope this is what you're looking for.

I agree. Jerry makes a great enrty level kilt for the money and his heavy weights are nice too. I'd browse his site if you don't want to spend a lot of moo-la...

Re: First Kilt help
I have a kilt from Sport Kilt that I like...quite reasonable. The works kilt is closest to a traditional kilt overall. The material is quite light weight my 16oz and 14 oz wool kilts will stay put in a bit of a breeze...my Sport Kilt...not so much. But I like it. Easy to care for...wash and wear.
BTW I live in Michigan...Marine City. Not far from Chesterfield Twp.
Here's a web site

I also have a Stillwater Kilt in the Irish National Tartan. It fits well and is a bit heavier. easy to order just read up on getting the size right and the length....you don't want to look like you are wearing a mini skirt....
