Re: Tan Accessories - Where Have They All Gone?

Officers of the Atholl Highlanders wear buff coloured belts; the men wear white.

Excellent example and photo, Sandy! I was thinking of the Atholl Highlanders actually.

When Lamar Britt made this sporran bag for me, he used buff (undyed) leather. It was actually a hide from a deer that an uncle of his (if I recall correctly) hunted back in the 1950s. Still quite supple, given the age. But very appropriate for a 50s era cantle.

And just a reminder that any of the Ferguson Britt sporrans are available in a variety of shades of leather, including some rather light, tan or "buff" shades.

Yes, fantastic Glen, fantastic indeed. The Athollmen always look rather splendid, don't they? Such a handsome uniform; complete with the striking Murray of Atholl tartan in their kilts and plaids, unique sporran cantles and tassel design, the useage of a plant badge (Juniper), their white/buff crossbelts, sporran straps and waistbelts (colour depending on rank), their solid coloured hose (except the pipers).

Their seat - Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Perthshire is remarkably beautiful. And having seen them in person several times, makes them even more splendid! By far, my favourite 'looking' Highland Regiment (knowing this type is the last private army in Europe and have become more or less, purely ceremonial).

    Cheers,

Now that is the colour I am talking about as buff. Excellent Matt, thank you

NB, paler shades of leather may darken when treated, waxed, or polished. Sometimes, the resulting color is even better, but it always helps to test any product on a spot that doesn't show.

I was interested to see that Slanj offers a red bridle leather sporran, too. We often see little pinked bits of red on sporrans, under cantles, but I do not think I have ever seen an entire sporran in red. Interestingly, they do not offer blue or yellow or green, just red. The do also offer one with a stamped skull and bones, so I am not suggesting that an offering from Slanj is a mark of tradition or authenticity, but I wonder about the opinions of the Rabble...

I like it, but it is not in my budget.

Personally, I do not care for sporrans in coloured leather. I prefer shades of brown and tan, or black - more traditional choices in my opinion.
