Sgian Dhub question
Do any of you gentlemen tuck a Sgian Dhub in your sock on any but formal ocassions?

I don't believe in knives that are decorative and not functional. Where I live now, I can't exactly go down to the local knife store and get a sgian dubh, and I am weary of ordering a knife on the internet because you can't really tell from the descriptions and pictures. Therefore, at the moment I don't have a sgian dubh to wear formally or casually.
My parents are currently having a sgian dubh custom made for me back home. Once I have that, I will wear it in my sock casually as well as formally because I always carried a knife when wearing pants and it wouldn't make sense to stop because I am wearing a kilt.

I one time found that I left home in such a hurry, I accidently slipped a butter knife into my kilt hose by mistake. I was the first to notice, so slowly as not to be seen pulled it out. My only saving grace was that the knife did not have any butter on it. Moral of the story, do not lay down two items together that look very very similar without having your first cup of coffee.

Hello Doc, welcome to the board.
I am surprised that Sgian Dhub's ave not come up before in discussions that I recall.
I have a nice one but rarely wear it, only formal occasions. I would rather have a Swiss Army knife on my belt.
But also in a world gone mad with security and political correctness, Sgian Dhub is not the wisest thing to have tucked away, not here at least.

If I've a kilt on, I've a sgian duhb on. I always carry a knife of some sort, no matter how I'm dressed, and I've never gotten through a day without using it, one way or the other.

Great Question! I too would first like to say
a big welcome to the board!
I echo what Celt said.
I carry a pocket knife every day as well. So its
natural that when I'm Kilted I have my Sgian Dhub.
Graham has a valid point; if I'm at a
place where I would wonder about taking my
pocket knife, then I'll leave the Sgian Dhub in the
car. I was going to a concert last year and I
had to go back to my car to take a 1&1/2 inch
swiss knife attached to my key ring off or I
would have had to throw it away.

I do not feel completely dressed without a knife of some sort on my person. Kilt or no kilt.
I, too, am very serious about knife quality and anything that just looks pretty and is not functional is not acceptable to me.
I have been wearing A swiss army kinfe on my belt. I am not sure I will continue to do this once I have my sgain dhub, which will be in my sock at all times when I wear my kilt.
I have ordered a mini-culloden, made by Cold Steel, from a Canadian source. This is a high quality knife in an concealex sheath that can also be worn around the neck.
Just for interest, I also have another standard tool which is a Grohmann #4 Survial knife, with a custom made concealex sheath, worn horizontally in the small of the back, when I venture into the bush forest for you non-Canadians).

Knives
If I'm dressed (and not on my way through an airport security gate or on board an airliner), I usually have a sweet little Gerber folder tucked away somewhere. Often have a Leatherman Juice somewhere handy as well.
When kilted, I have a wonderful hand-carved sgian dhu in my sock. The black wooden knife was hand-made by a good friend up in Guelph, Ontario, of centuries-old bog oak from the UK (not sure exactly where). I wear it because it's beautiful and exotic and because I admire Kim's work greatly. The Gerber will be tucked into a waistband or somesuch, for function.

Sounds to me like kilted men are often knife-carrying ourdoor types! guess we have a lot in common.
As I said, compared to a swiss, with scissors, screwdriver and pliers, I find a sgian dhub a bit "impractical". They are a dress knife to me, thats' all.
I did wear one once at Scottish Country dancing, I soon learned that was a mistake, the dancing made the thing slip down to my boot!
