I know the kilt looks very short in this picture but it is just the angle of the kilt/leg/camera. Also the shirt sleeves are too long... I had to get the shirt last minute on the day because of an ironing disaster with the one I brought with me (what is it about weddings, white shirts and irons - now I always pack a minimum of two!).
Looks like a beautiful day - nice outfit - and a lovely lady by your side. Well done!

Kilt nights down at the pub are a great opportunity for spotting the "New Traditionalists."

Adam in the center is certainly rockin' the tartan! Check out the sporran and shoes....

I too like that hand knit sweater! Your wife knits beautifully. That tartan is very nice as well, what's it called?

I think confidence has so much to so with whatever we wear , kilted or not, it's neither about breaking rules nor is it being completely anarchist.I want to feel comfortable whatever I'm wearing, and in whatever situation, there are times that people do comment on my choices, and sometimes they don't work as well as I had hoped but I'm always willing to learn and give it a go!

    20 oz Italian green tweed

Well said Paul. If you don't try it, how will you know. Great attitude. That green is good looking! And the two different stylings show an amazing versatility for what I originally thought of as a "tough" color to work with. You look great!

Here's a few of that might fit the bill. All are without a jacket or tie and use a limited palette of colours, except for the tartan.

My idea in the first is just dressing nicely but also according to the modern sense of relaxed formality. I'm wearing the New World Irish tartan (my own design) in acrylic:

At the pub with New Guise, casual but still taking it up a notch from just a tee shirt. 16 oz wool, 4 yard Douglas modern kilt:

This last one to me is a bit dressier because of the white shirt with a mandarin collar, which precludes the need for a tie. Maple Leaf tartan PV from Canadian Casual Kilts:
    - Justitia et fortitudo invincibilia sunt
    - An t'arm breac dearg

Re: The New Traditionalists (Traditional kilts, Modern looks)

    Great Thread Jamie.

I'll throw in some summer pictures from the Bay Area, when I was there...

Personally I am not comfortable going without hose or hose-tops. It is perhaps my own sense of living tradition. The pic above is a rather informal get up.

    Little off center.

Here we have some post casual street piping... minus brown sandals. Like to dress up piping with the bonnet and keep the sun out of my eyes. Even if I'm practicing, I like to at least grab the Balmoral... my liturgical nature maybe.

The second pic, minus the bonnet is about as "low" as I would dress... something like what folks might sport as a jeans t-shirt casual. I know some feel the T-shirt is an undershirt, though in many contexts there is a difference between a undershirt and a t-shirt... the shirt itself being of a different quality and perhaps with a design.

I can remember in my teenage years hiking in Southern Delaware in the humid summer and going bare chested, but I don't think that really counts as "Dress"... incidentally, would not part with hose.

    peace,
